EPILOGUE
CHAPTER 1
Lena Campbell is looking forward to celebrating the upcoming holidays in her new home with her daughter Tamisha. She has much to be thankful for taking nothing for granted being the recipient of many blessing. With Christmas approaching the one gift she would love to have the opportunity at finding true love like her friends Lovely Alcoa, Lesa Morrison and Robin Zavala. Watching her friends shown unconditional love by their husbands makes her heart hurt as it craves the same adoration. She wants the same kind of real love in her life.
Her volatile relationship with Wayne Naylor, “aka’ Lil’ Wayne” and her daughter Tamisha’s father, was a storm in itself with the cheating and physical abuse. The only good thing to come from their volatile union is their daughter. Wayne to this day denies Tamisha came from his seed, a claim he can’t dispute because she’s the spitting image of him except for a few delicate features she inherited from Lena. Tamisha, now five years old going on thirteen, is so grown. If Lena didn’t know any better, she would swear her daughter has lived on this earth before.
Lately, Lena’s plate has been full raising her daughter as a single parent, working full-time at Stewart’s Soul Food Palace and furthering her education attending college at Murfreesboro Tennessee State University as a full-time student. Without the help from her Mom, Elsie Campbell, and sister Zelma, she didn’t know if she would make it sometimes. Her older brother Zachary and his family live in Detroit, Michigan along with her sister older Marilyn and her family. She also gets support from her friends as well. The thought of adding a relationship to her already busy schedule doesn’t seem plausible, but if given a chance, she would find a way to make it work.
Lena isn’t saying there haven’t been men interested in dating her. She’s had her fair share of admirers. One man, in particular, comes to mind named Michael Gideon, a friend of Patrick Alcoa and Ivan Morrison. Michael has flirted with her often after their introduction during the preparation for the Alcoa’s wedding. Over the past year and a half, she’s attended several functions he was also present. Michael made his intentions clear of his interest for the two of them to be more than friends. The problem with that scenario is he’s married and off limits. Not to mention, his wife, Labrina, is very possessive and jealous. Lena has been warned numerous times by Lovely, Lesa and Robin Michael is off limits, but for some reason, she finds herself attracted to him. Even though she contributes to their impulsive flirtatious behavior, she knows not to cross the line, even if she is tempted to do so. Still, she’s flattered by the attention she receives from this gorgeous, wealthy friend and she mumbles to herself “If only” as erotic thoughts of Michael enters her mind.
Her next suitor competing for her affection is Fahim Zavala, a handsome and well built Puerto Rican, who is very single, very sexy and very outspoken. He also happens to be Rodrigo Zavala’s oldest brother. She can listen to him talk for days with his sexy Latin accent. Whenever Fahim is in town visiting, which seems to be a lot lately, he makes it a point to locate her, whether she is at work, attending school or chilling at home with Tami. He hunts her down to personally say hello and to see if she is available to have lunch or dinner or just to hang out. Living in a different city and state doesn’t deter his interest in her because if he’s not in town, he regularly calls her, making Lena feel special. The only setback to having a serious relationship with Fahim is the long distance. He’s settled in New York, and she’s living in Tennessee, but if given a chance she could see herself falling in love with him if the circumstances were different.
Her last suitor, Gerard Conway, has her questioning her choices in the men she attracts. Gerard is an employee at Hearst Trucking. He works for Lovely Alcoa’s husband, Patrick, as his operations manager. He is an attractive white man with gorgeous brown eyes, changing color from light to dark depending on his mood. He has sandy-blond hair with a well-trimmed goatee shaped around his mouth and chin. They met at the Alcoa’s wedding celebration and have been on a few dates. Lena thinks back to a time when she would never consider dating outside her race especially a white guy. But after her negative relationship with Lil’ Wayne, she no longer discriminates with who she chooses to spend her time. As long as they love, respect and are faithful to her and treats her daughter with love and respect as well, no one is off limits. Out of all the three men on her radar, Fahim and Michael are the only ones who have spent time with her daughter since they always seem to end up at the same functions all the time. Since she is still getting acquainted with Gerard, she isn’t ready to introduce him to her pride and joy yet especially not knowing how the relationship will pan out.
Looking out the bay window of her newly purchased home, she still can’t understand how she’s been so blessed to have a great family and great friends. She had the opportunity to purchase her first home from her friend, Lovely. The deal became final after Lovely and Patrick returned from their honeymoon in Hawaii, and she moved into his penthouse. Laria was supposed to live there after graduating but decided she needed to stay at home with her dad, Dale Stewart who has been very ill. With the help of Madeline Stewart, her employer, and Lovely’s Aunt Maggie Petawang, vouching for her at the bank when she applied for a home loan, Lena was able to secure the money to buy the house from Lovely.
Lena thinks back on the fateful day Lovely, and Laria had dinner at Logan’s, where she was working at the time, barely making ends meet. Lil’ Wayne never contributed to helping with the care of their daughter or paying the bills in their home. It got under his skin so bad she would rather take his abuse, mentally and physically, than make him money on the str
eets as one of his prostitutes.
She met Wayne Naylor through his twin cousins, Toni and Tonisha Wilson. Their older brother, Grady Wilson ‘aka’ Shady, is also in an off and on again relationship with Laria Stewart. At the time, Toni, Tonisha and she were tight as thieves and graduating from high school together. The twins were having a banging cookout party at their father’s home on the north side of town to celebrate the occasion. Their parents were divorced, and the sisters, who at the time she thought were her friends, lived in the same area as her family in Nolensville.
At the cookout, she’s introduced to Wayne, the most handsome guy she’d ever seen. Of course, he was a street thug, but he was smooth with his words which one of his many attributes she found attractive. His toned body and good looks added to his charm. He had pretty straight white teeth, and when he looked into her eyes, her virgin pussy tingled instantly, sending severe butterflies to her stomach. She became hypnotized by his charismatic sex appeal. He sweet talked her out of her virginity, and a few months later the real Wayne Naylor surfaced.
Lena found out to her detriment what kind of man she had become involved with. At the time, it was too late to leave him finding out a couple of months into their relationship they created a baby. Being naïve back then, Lena believed she loved Wayne and could change him, make him into a better person. She wanted him to become the father and boyfriend she needed him to be. But that was wishful thinking on her part. The only thing on his mind was adding her to his entourage of whores making money for him on the streets. He was also a member of the Outlaw Squad working for those notorious Atkins brothers “Outlaw” and “Doughboy” selling drugs. She survived, grateful to the Stewarts for being there when the opportunity arose, not saying her family wasn’t a big help as well.
CHAPTER 2
Now it’s a week before Christmas, and the Stewarts are preparing for their annual Christmas dinner with the guest list doubling from the year before. Instead of working as a server like she did the previous year, she and her daughter, Tamisha, are included on the guest list as attendees. Lovely and Patrick are moving to New York sometime after the New Year, and the dinner will be a going away party as well.
Gerard, who doesn’t have family in town, is invited to the dinner as the Alcoas guest. He was also chosen by Patrick to oversee and manage Hearst Trucking once they move the New York. Patrick’s sister, Alice Alcoa Atwater will also be co-managing as well. Lena learned a couple of days ago after talking with her friend, Lesa Morrison, Michael, his wife and children will be in attendance since they are spending Christmas with them this year. Last but not least, after speaking with her friend Robin Zavala, she found out Fahim would be making an appearance at the dinner. He is coming with his parents, his other siblings and their families who are spending Christmas with them this year and have been invited personally by Thorpe Stewart Sr to celebrate the joyous occasion with their family.
Lena doesn’t know how she is going to handle having all three men competing for her attention all in the same place at the same time. She’s not worried too much about Michael since his wife and children will be present, but she knows that won’t stop him from always observing her with his eyes. “How the hell am I going to survive this Christmas dinner with them all being in the same vicinity?” Lena mumbles to herself. She needs to talk to someone who won’t criticize or run back to anyone gossiping about what they discuss.
Lena has become great friends with Tura Figest, a criminal law major who also attends MTSU. She was born and raised in the United States, but her family is from India. Tura is the total opposite of Lena. She’s wild with an ‘I don’t give a damn’ attitude. Since becoming friends, she has found her to be very loyal, always being there when Lena needs her. But if you cross her, she can be your worst enemy. Lena has witness firsthand how Tura handles people who treat her wrong. She, on the other hand, shakes things off and walks away disassociating herself from the troublesome person and situation.
Lena dials Tura’s digits waiting for her to answer. When she hears a muffled and groggy “Lena, this better be life or death situation for you to be calling so early this morning. What time is it anyway?” “Girl, get your behind out of bed. It’s after 10 am and past time for you to be up. Don’t you have your last mid-term exam at noon today? What the hell did you do last night or should I ask?” “Damn Lena, you sounding like my mother who, at the moment, is in an entirely different country. If you must know, I got in around 4 am” she mumbles sounding like she’s about to fall back asleep.
“Tura,” Lena shouts to get her friends attention “you know the last two weeks have been for our mid-term exams. You should be studying so you can pass these hard tests. You can party afterward. I know there will be other parties going on. You don’t have to go to all of them.” But Lena, I couldn’t pass up the Lambda Alpha Kappa annual Christmas bash. You should have gotten a babysitter and joined us in all the fun. And besides, you’re one to talk since you’ve got all your exams out of the way already. The test today is my last one, and I’m going to pass it with flying colors like I know I aced the others” she says confidently while still lying in bed half-awake now that Lena continues to run off at the mouth. Lena laughs listening to Tura whine.” “Seriously Lena, you should have come to the party with me. You missed eyeballing many attractive men. My eyes still hurt, I was so busy getting my look on.” “Girlfriend, I don’t have time to be out partying when I’ve got a child to raise, a job to work and a degree to achieve. Tura, you need to set your priorities and put your education first. All your partying won’t find a well-paying job after graduation.”
Tura sits up in the bed fully awake now, staring back at her phone before speaking. “Lena Campbell, I know you didn’t disturb my sleep to call and preach another one of your sermons to me. Cause if you did, I’m about to say something to you that will hurt your feelings!” Lena sighs in the phone and says “I’m sorry Tura. No, I didn’t call to lecture you on how your priorities in life are totally screwed up.” “So why did you call, Lena?” Tura asks while throwing the cover off and walking into the bathroom to empty her bladder.
“I called” Lena states “because I find myself in some trouble.” “You, in trouble? Please, Lena. You’re Ms. Perfect and don’t take what I’m saying as something negative.” “Whatever, Tura! I'm serious. It's men trouble as in plural.” That piques Tura’s attention, and she says “Well, spill it chick. What kind of men problems?” Lena sighs again before explaining.
CHAPTER 3
“You know we’ve discussed in great detail the three men who are interested in having a relationship with me. Well, they all will be attending my friend Lovely’s family Christmas dinner and Tami, and I have also invited as well. And before you say anything about Michael Gideon, I know he’s off limits, and I need to remove him from my list. That said Michael will be in attendance with his wife and kids. It may become a problem because I know he will be watching my every move. He might even try throwing some conversation my way.” “So let the Don Juan wannabe do just that and look. All he can do is watch! If his wife is as bad as you say she is, that fool won’t say or do shit but stay in his lane.” “I know you’re right Tura. Honestly, all we’ve done is flirt a little with each other. I would never let it go to the next level since he’s married.” “Lena, that’s still cheating. How would you like it if it was your husband or boyfriend checking out another woman while you are in the same room? I can answer the question for you. You wouldn’t. Hell, if he’s doing that to his wife you can guarantee he will do it to you. Take him off your list of men interested, Lena!” “Okay, Okay! I got the message.”
Changing the topic of their conversation, Lena continues. “So, Fahim and Gerard will be in attendance as well. With Fahim, I’m a bit worried how he will react. Fahim just doesn’t care. He’s very expressive and honest about his feelings and very touchy, feely. He loves to smooch on my lips, my neck and grabbing my butt cheeks, squeezing them. I like him a lot and can see us being in
a serious relationship, but he lives in New York, and I live here. I can’t see myself hooked up with someone long distance. You already know I have trust issues. I’m not moving away from my family and friends to be with a man who may or may not be ready for a serious relationship. I can’t and won’t uproot my daughter like that.”
“Have you and Fahim discussed taking whatever it is going on between the two of you to the next phase, the next step?” “Yeah, Fahim has sent hints my way a few times but you know I don’t know when to take him seriously, he jokes around so much.” “Oh, okay. You haven’t discussed that with me yet, you know, Fahim wanting to take your friendship to a romantic level. So what do you feel about the white dude, Gerard?
Lena sighs again. “I don’t know how to take Gerard, Tura. We’ve had a splendid time together on the few dates we’ve shared. When we kiss, my blood heats up, but that happens with Fahim as well, but with Fahim, it’s more intense. Gerard is so methodical and hard to read. It’s hard to explain. When he looks at me, it’s like he’s staring into my soul, trying to read my thoughts and figure out who I am, you get what I’m saying? When he does that, my coochie gets all wet and tingly. But I also get those same vibes with Fahim when he’s just holding my hand or talking to me with his sexy Latin dialect. If he were to look at me the way Gerard does, I would drop my panties in a heartbeat letting him have his way with me.”
“I don’t know what to tell you, girlfriend. I guess you will have to see which man is willing to fight for your affection. But don’t play with their feelings, Lena. You need to let them both know they aren’t the only guy you’re dating. You also need to tell them the reason why you feel the need to date both of them.” With a serious tone in her voice, Tura says “The Rican and The White Boy” need to know how you feel about everything, girlfriend. Honesty is the best policy even if it hurts or upsets the people involved. If Fahim is serious, he needs to make a decision if you are worth uprooting his life and moving to Tennessee. Gerard needs to let you know what his real feelings are for you or is he experiencing a taste of jungle fever as most white men do. You can’t read their minds.” Lena sighs saying “I know Tura, I know.”
