“Yes,” Mama said with a wide grin on her face. “Mr. Chance, the future Earl of Arundell, is to be my son-in-law.”
Christopher stood and bowed to the three other matrons. “Ladies,” he intoned.
They all looked him over for a bit. “Well, done, Clare. Well done,” Lady Portland allowed.
“A fine choice,” Lady Penmore added.
Mama winked at her friends. “See. I told you she would make the right choice. I believe you each owe me five pounds.”
Lady Agatha’s Cheshire-cat smile spread across her cheeks and her wink was entirely unrepentant. “Ladies, I daresay, we did it.”
