Tropical Connections Page 26

Then slowly he drew back. ‘Seriously, Claire, we can go anywhere. Don’t have to stay here. I’ll put a manager on the farm. Just choose somewhere in the world and we’ll go. I’ll try to fix up a job or a project. But it’s got to be together. On a permanent basis. That’s what I want, at least. And I guess you wouldn’t have come all this way unless you quite liked me.’

She smiled. ‘Yes, I quite like you.’ She held him close. Eventually she said, ‘Could we go back to Maising one day?’

‘Yes, maybe, but wherever we go, you must still do what you want, your own thing. I’m worried about your ancient gods, all those statues and old stones of yours. Mustn’t neglect them.’

‘I’ve been thinking. I might write a book about the old stones actually, but I can do that anywhere in the world. And you know something?’

  ‘Mm?’

‘They’ve been around a long time, the gods and their statues. Hundreds of years. I can leave them alone for a bit and they won’t mind. They’ll wait as long as I want. I’d rather concentrate on the living right now, the present.’

‘So is that yes?’ he asked after a while.

She kissed him again. ‘Seems to be.’

‘So let’s go for it,’ he said, with a wide happy smile.
