And Never Let Her Down: A Town of Destiny Novel Page 11

by Nancy Glynn

Aubrey’s nerves jittered throughout her body. She smiled and nodded at the beautiful Texan woman who spoke of her son with pride. She was already given a tour of the grand estate and walked on the land that Hayden had apparently saved with his modeling.

“You are everything my son has told me. I loved your brother for what he did years ago and welcome any family of his with open arms.”

She loved her twang, just like Hayden’s. “Thank you, Aurora. Hayden speaks highly of his family. You taught him how to make a mean chili.”

Aurora beamed. She took her hand and held it on her lap. “Aren’t you precious.”

  “Mama? You home?”

They both turned to see Hayden rush through the doorway and stop dead in his tracks.

  “Aubrey? I don’t understand…”

“I’ll let you two be alone.” Aurora stood and walked to her son, allowing him to kiss her cheek in greeting. “She’s a beautiful lady, son. You have my blessing.” She turned and winked at Aubrey before disappearing.

“I’m sorry I didn’t warn you, but I wanted to surprise you. Surprise!”

He ran to her and pulled her into his arms. “You forgive me? You know I don’t want anyone but you?”

“There’s nothing to forgive. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

  “But how…why?”

She took him by the hand and sat. “Elece contacted me. She told me everything.” She glanced at his wrist and touched the hair band. “I love that you did that.”

  “She told you?”

Aubrey nodded and touched his face. “I love you, Hayden. I always did.”

He chuckled. “Even on that first day we met when you threw your crutch at me?” He rubbed her arm.

  “Even then. Before then.”

He kissed her then, sliding his tongue inside her warmth. “I love you so much. I ached being away from you.”

“We’ll have to figure this out, but I can move here if I have to.”

“No. Absolutely not. I talked to my family and I’ll move to you.”

“Hayden, I can rent my house out to someone else. I don’t mind. Your whole family is here.”

“I can’t ask you to do that, baby.”

“I’m coming here. I can write anywhere. My parents are busy with their retired friends and vacations. I hardly see them. We can visit. I really don’t mind. It’s beautiful here, too. I can get used to this weather.” She smiled and kissed him.

He sighed. “Fine, but as soon as you’re not happy, we’ll go back. But I would love to see you ride a horse.” He grinned and kissed her neck.

“I bet you would.” She giggled at his feathery kisses, wanting more.

“Hey, what about your reconstructive surgery? Are you still doing that?”

She nodded. “I am but nothing crazy, just enough for me to feel good.”

“I’ll support whatever you choose. You know I think you’re beautiful no matter what. Perfect.”

“I know. That’s why I love you so much. You made me feel that way, like I was a woman. I needed that.”

  “Good.”

“So…a model, huh?” She gave a wide grin, raising her brows up and down.

“Ugh…I can’t believe Elece told you that. My parents have no idea so please don’t say anything. I think my mom would faint on the spot.”

She laughed. “I can imagine that.”

“Well…” He stood and pulled her up. “Let’s give you a tour. Wait, where’s the cat?”

“Oh, your dad has her. He fell in love with her as soon as I walked in. I asked them first if it was okay before I brought her.”

“Yeah, my dad loves animals. Okay, let’s go.”

“Your mom already showed me the grounds.”

“Did she show you my room?”

“You mean when you were a teen? Oh, I have to see that.”

He laughed. “God, I love you, girl.” He wrapped his arm around her to guide her down the corridor. “And wait until you meet Memaw. You’re gonna love her.”

She leaned her head against his arm. “I love you, too, Cowboy.”
