The breeze picked up, threatening another storm. The wind chimes clinked, starting their evening song. “She never taught me anything, but I’ve always seen things that weren’t there. I thought something was wrong with my brain.”

“Hush. There ain’t nothing wrong with you. I don’t think your daddy liked the magic much, and his hate diluted whatever you could do. Wasn’t his fault, a lot of people are raised like that. The magic woke up when he died, I know it. There might be more asleep in you still.” She took my empty ice cream bowl and walked inside.

A mosquito landed on my knee, and I smacked it before it could make its connection. “Bugs are out.”

“I’ll get the movie started. You’re going to love it.”

I didn’t want to watch another movie. I wanted to walk out into the darkness, down the trail and into the center of the woods. I wanted to demand that Aunt Dee tell me everything herself. I wanted to go back in time and stop Dad from killing Mama.

Magic was more powerful than what Dad did. Why of all the men in the world, did they have to fall in love with him?

But instead of placing demands on Aunt Dee, I conceded to another movie night, hiding in the house. I pulled the door open as All By Myself blared from the living room; Cecelia had started the movie without me.

A cold gust of wind lifted the hairs on my neck. I looked over my shoulder just as Jordan’s paperback opened and fell from the chair onto the porch floor. The pages flipped back and forth until the wind stopped and left the spine open. I leaned over the book and smiled as a warmth fell over me.
