Queer Magick Page 24

by Davis, L. C.

His emerald eyes lit up in confusion. "That's what you want to know?"

"You said his name during sex," I reminded him. "I might be dead, but I've still got my pride."

"Adam," he murmured, like he was savoring the taste of the name on his tongue. "Adam was...mine."

  "Was?"

  "Mh."

  "Was he another demon, or...?"

"No. No, he was an angel," he said quietly. "The most beautiful angel in all of Heaven."

  "I thought that was Lucifer."

He let out a puff of air through his nose, but it was hard to tell if it was amusement or offense. He kept his face hidden and he went quiet. I was starting to think he had fallen asleep when he asked, "Do you know what it takes to make an angel fall, Daniel?"

  "Can't say I do."

"There's only one thing," he said quietly. "It's not about fame or power or pride like everyone thinks. You wanna make an angel fall? Make him fall in love. With a boy, with a girl, with the world itself. Love is only thing in this world that matters enough to make a loyal servant of God willing to cast himself into obscurity just to have a taste of it. I deal in the synthetic stuff, in lust and sex, but if there's anything that'll be the end of us all, it's love."

"Is that why you fell? Love?"

"What makes you think I was ever an angel?" he scoffed.

"Just assumed that's where demons came from, I guess."

"No. Not all of them. Lucifer made some of us."

"I'm not exactly familiar with the mythology, but didn't he fall because he didn't want to bow to humans or some shit like that?"

"Yes, but your stories never look beyond that to ask why. Why didn't he want to bow to humankind?"

"I always figured it was because we kind of suck."

He laughed. "Lucifer loved God as fiercely as any angel ever did, and when he was commanded to bend his knee, he refused. He wasn't the only one who thought it was a test. Imagine if you loved someone with all your heart, lived for them, and were willing to die for them. If that person asked you to be with someone else, to betray them, would you do it? Or would you refuse and insist that it was some cruel test of your devotion until the bitter end?"

I thought about the odd question and finally shook my head. "I don't know."

He leaned down to kiss me, smiling mischievously. "Then you still love like a human."

"And you?" I asked, reaching up to trace the elegant planes of his face. He seemed so much softer than usual. Soft to the touch and all my other senses. "If you were an angel, could you ever love a human as much as you loved God?"

His smile grew as he propped himself up on his elbow, his hair spilling out around his bare shoulders. "That's why I'm going to make a better devil than Lucifer ever could. I fell madly in love with you fuckers from the first moment you crawled out of the ooze."

"You scare the hell out of me, you know that?"

He laid back down, nuzzling into my neck with a heavy sigh. I held him until I could hear his breathing turn to the steady rhythm of sleep, and part of me was surprised he could sleep at all. My thoughts were too heavy to even try, so I ended up just staring at the ceiling. I felt calmer, almost like he had absorbed all the pent-up anger and aggression and the hunger for something I couldn't quite put a name to. I vaguely remembered some story about incubi feeding on sexual energy, so I could hope that was all there was to it, but hope had yet to work out for me. There was always a hidden cost with Locke, but unlike Dennis, at least I knew not to trust him. I was already damned, dead and destined to play a role in the one story I needed to be a work of fiction. It wasn't like I had a life to lose anymore, so maybe it was time I started living it.
