His hand moved to the sleeve of his robe but before he could snatch the wand from its hiding place, he felt a heavy hand at his neck. Feeling his body lift from the floor and turn direction he found himself staring at a familiar face. Bashir had one last trick up his sleeve and quickly grabbing the amulet that hung around his neck he shouted out a single word. Johnny was thrown back across the desk and into the far wall, and by the time he’d recovered, the sorcerer had his wand in his hand. Bashir scowled at Damien knowing that he’d been betrayed, and then turned his attention back to Johnny.
“If you’d waited I would’ve returned in due time,” said Bashir clearly getting ready to cast a spell.
As he did so, the chanting from outside became louder and Bashir was finding it hard to concentrate. Johnny was trying to get to him as was Damien, but they were hitting a force that could neither be seen nor penetrated. This had the effect of bringing on Johnny’s change, and as his forehead protruded, his strength doubled. Slowly he was able to take a step forward, much to Bashir’s surprise.
Then Johnny began to feel that same searing heat he’d felt the last time he’d tried to get Bashir, and with each step, the pain and wisps of smoke emanating from his hardened skin got worse.
Bashir began to panic, as he watched Johnny getting ever closer, because this time he didn’t have an escape planned out and couldn’t concentrate with all the chanting going on anyway.
“Why won’t you die vampire?” he shouted as Johnny got within reach.
“I’m not just a vampire, I’m a Berserker,” replied Johnny before snapping his neck with one hand and thrusting his other through Bashir’s chest to bring his heart out on the other side.
The scream followed by the flakes of dust filling the air was the signal that it was all over, and Johnny’s face began to heal and change as he calmed down and reverted to his normal persona. He turned to find Cassandra and the other members of the coven entering the tower.
“Thank you, that interruption was all I needed to finish the job,” he said.
They then had vacated the tower as it began to rumble. Damien surmised that now the magic holding it together had gone it would soon collapse. They all got out just in time and turned back to watch the tower crumble to the ground. They left for home after that, and Johnny held Cassandra close as they walked. His only thoughts now were of building a future in the meadow with those that he cared about. Whether that was, the future, he could expect remained to be seen.
