Holding up his hand to stop any further TMI that Kent just didn’t need to hear, he said the only thing that came to mind. “Keep your freaky love stories to yourself. I just stopped by to check on Jenna.”
Adam laughed and stepped back to let him through the door. “Come on in. Jenna’s getting dressed after her shower, but she’ll be out in a minute. While you’re waiting on her, tell me what happened with the investigation on the college shooting.”
Kent’s shoulders tensed at the reminder of that gory day, but he did his best to push the memories to the back of his mind.
“Ten dead, sixteen injured, and all because one kid was pissed that he was denied college acceptance there. Can you believe that shit?”
He watched as Adam walked over to a chair to sit down and shook his head. “How did you keep the fact that the shooter was a demon covered up?”
Shrugging, Kent walked over to the couch facing him, sat down, and told him the truth. “The kids were so traumatized that they didn’t believe their eyes that guns were levitating. To them, the shooter was holding two guns and that was that. The rest of the guy’s life was no problem. He had no family to be found, so no problems there. His apartment was a little bit of a different story. He had ‘anti-human’ propaganda written all over his walls. In the end, that only helped close the case. The detectives wrote him off as a crackpot and that was the end.”
Nodding as if pleased, Adam suddenly got a mischievous look on his face. “How about a better topic to talk about? You can tell me about this rumor I heard about you being hot for a certain Amazon.”
Feeling his eye twitch, Kent exploded, “That woman drives me fucking nuts! Did you know she was a fucking bet shark?”
Adam cocked his head to the side, reminding Kent all too much that the man was more beast than man. “What the hell is a bet shark?”
“Ever hear of a card shark or a pool shark?” When the alpha nodded, Kent explained, “Well, Chloe is a bet shark. That woman conned my ass, and now I owe her.”
Adam snorted a laugh, and then asked, “Well, what do you owe her?”
Kent felt his eye twitch again, worried the tick might become permanent if the Amazon drove him any crazier. “I don’t know yet; that’s what scares me.”
It was at that moment that Jenna walked out of their bedroom, dressed in a tank top and jeans, with her arms crossed over her chest. “What do you mean, you don’t know what you owe her? That’s crazy, Kent! She could ask you for a pair of Jimmy Choos, or worse, your car!”
Kent plopped down on their couch and wiped a hand over his weary face. “Let’s just hope she asks for the fucking shoes.”
