An Honest Mistake Page 8

by L. Grubb

“Nothing. Just happy to be going home.” She shrugs and looks out the windshield.

“Ah…can’t wait to get rid of me already?” I smirk at her, and she laughs in good humor.

“Yeah, that’s it. The sex was so dull and all..” she trails off, snickering behind one of her delicate hands.

I growl at her. “When we get to your apartment, I’ll have to remind you of how dull the sex is.”

A discreet coughing comes from beside Alexis. Shit, I almost forgot Lauren was in the truck with us.

“I don’t mean to interrupt your playtime, but you need my address to take me back first. I don’t wish to be a spectator to my best friend having ‘dull’ sex,” Lauren says, doing the quotey fingers thing that girls do to emphasize a point while trying not to laugh.

“Hardy fucking har. What’s your address, pinky?” I ask her.

She spouts off her address which is just off the boulevard, down a small cul-de-sac.

Parking the truck, I jump out to give them a few girly minutes and to get Lauren’s beach bag from the back.

Five minutes later, she finally emerges from the truck, grabs her bag and skips to the main door of her apartment; small in structure, white paint covering the exterior, black framed windows, and dark wood framing the main door, fitting maybe three or four apartments inside.

“Laters, Lauren. I’m sure we’ll meet again!” I call out to her while rounding the truck to take Alexis to her home and show her what she’ll really be missing.

As we drive back down the boulevard in the direction of her address, I feel Alexis staring at me. Again.

“What now?” I smirk, seeing her eyes widening from the corner of my eye.

  “I’ve been thinking.”

I glance at her and notice the small crease on her forehead and worrying her bottom lip. I direct my attention back to the road before asking, “Anything in particular?”

  “My job, you. Mainly us.”

“What about us, sweetheart?” I feel the worry pooling in my gut. Is she pulling away? Why?

  “Maybe we should…”

I quickly cut her off, “Don’t even go there, princess. Didn’t I make it clear yesterday that I want to give this a shot?”

  “Yes, but…”

“No buts. Only because you’re going back to your apartment doesn’t mean we won’t see each other, Alexis.” I pause, letting what I say sink in. “I want to take you on a date. Friday night.”

She doesn’t say jack shit until we’ve pulled over outside her apartment. I can practically see the wheels turning in her head.

“Well? Don’t leave me hanging here, princess.” I chuckle, nervously.

Finally, she turns to look at me. “Okay. Friday.”

A joyous grin illuminates my face. “Awesome. I’ll pick you up at seven. Now, let me take you upstairs so I can remind you how ‘dull’ the sex is.”

Before she can say another word, I hop down from the truck and jog to her side. Being a gentleman, I open her door and help her down. Setting her on her feet, I go and grab her overly large beach bag, and lead her to the main door of the apartment complex.

“After you, darlin’.” I smirk at her. Her tell-tale blush is tinting her pale cheeks a gorgeous shade of pink. Beautiful.

“Good afternoon, Miss Newman,” an older man in uniform and hat says, opening the door. “You have a package at the front desk. Let me grab it for you before you go up.”

“Thank you, Henry.” Alexis gives him a warm smile as she walks into the lobby.

The lobby is bigger than I expected. Marble floors and a high ceiling with a sparkling chandelier twinkling from the middle. The front desk is situated to the right of the main doors, made of study oak, its semi-circle design wrapping round a back room where I can see the security cameras. Soft, classical music is playing from the radio on the desk, basking the room with welcoming vibes. This place must cost a shit load to rent. It’s more like a mini, luxurious hotel than an apartment complex. Even the fucking elevators are made of gold. I feel a little out of place and uncomfortable in such a posh, up-scale building.

Alexis collects her package from the doorman and leads me to the posh-style elevators. I press the button and a soft ding alerts us of its arrival.

On our way up, I feel the electricity buzzing all around; an unavoidable spark igniting between us.

I breathe a sigh of relief when we stop on the second floor. Twenty more seconds and I would have had her pinned against one of the unnecessary mirrors that surround the interior of the elevator.

We walk down the narrow hallway and stop at the last door on the right. Alexis unlocks it with a keycard, the kind you get at hotels, and I follow her in.

Fuck. Me. Her apartment is huge! It’s an open plan, with the kitchen separating the den by a rounded breakfast bar, a small hallway leading to what I can only guess as her bedroom and the bathroom.

Alexis giggles at my slack jaw. I turn and say, “Where the fuck do you work to be able to afford such a swanky place?”

“The company I work for pays for it. Thankfully.” She places her beach bag on the breakfast bar top before removing her dainty flip-flops.

I stalk toward her and pin her to the edge of the work surface. “Hmm…So, what were we going to do again?” I smile smugly at her as she grabs my biceps. “Oh yes, dull sex.”

She rolls her eyes at my using the ‘dull sex’ excuse again.

I pick her up, and she wraps her slender legs around my waist. I carry her down the short hallway and look between the two doors.

“The door on the left,” she pants in my ear.

I make quick work of opening the door, struggling slightly with having Alexis wrapped around me tightly.

When I finally get the stupid door open, I walk swiftly toward the massive king-size bed that’s in front of a picturesque window.

We fall to the bed in a flurry of entwined limbs. I kiss her, hard, my hands roaming up her thin, pale pink shirt. I’m glad girls take a lot of spare clothes with them when they go out for the day, you never know when you’ll need them, I guess.

Licking the seam of her lips, begging for entrance, I palm her breast through her lacy bra. Her mouth pops open and I dive in, swirling my tongue with hers.

I can’t hold back. My dick is straining painfully against the zipper of my jeans.

“Don’t hold back, Dominic. Take me.”

Can this chick read my mind? Don’t really give a fuck. I quickly take off her skinny jeans.

  What the fuck? “No panties?”

She laughs, shyly. “I kinda didn’t have a clean pair.”

  “That’s fucking hot, princess.”

My fingers instantly search for her clit and rub with precise movements. She mewls in pleasure, and I rub hard before moving my hand lower. I slowly enter two fingers and find her dripping wet and so ready for my dick.

Sitting on my heels, I stare down at her glistening mound, begging for my attention. No time for more foreplay.

I pop the button of my jeans and lower the zipper, pulling my painfully erect dick free. I squeeze the base, trying to relieve some of the pressure. Fuck. What does this girl do to me?

I look down at Alexis’ flushed face, eyes hooded with lust. Sexual longing spreads warmth through my insides, funny tingles spreading in my belly.

I lower my jeans and boxers and pull her hips toward me, slamming into her.

“Ahh!” she screams. I pound into her with all the strength I can muster. I feel her walls quivering, thighs shaking and stop.

“What the hell, Dom? I was about to come,” she shouts at me.

I laugh and pull her to straddle me. “I want you to ride me, baby.”

I pull her top over her head and remove her delectable bra, freeing her heavy breasts into my waiting hands. I grasp a nipple in my mouth, sucking and licking. Pleasure courses through my veins. She leans back, her nipple popping free from the clutches of my mouth.

She grabs my shirt and ri
ps it over my head before pushing me back against the mattress.

Leaning forward, she whispers seductively into my ear, “Enjoy the ride, Dominic.”

Christ. The way her tongue caresses over my name makes goose bumps rise along my skin, making me want to shoot my load instantly.

She places her hands on my sweaty chest, moving slowly. Too fucking slowly. I ground my teeth and clench my jaw to restrain myself. Fuck.

Finally, she starts moving faster, in and out, boobs bouncing in my face. What a shit hot view. I stare. I can’t help it, her breasts are perfect in shape and size. The perfect handful.

Faster and faster she bounces, chasing her release. My grip on her hips tighten and I thrust, hard, once and she explodes, coating me in her flowing juices.

I flip her over and start thrusting in a mad pace. I quickly hook one of her legs over my shoulder, pounding harder and faster. She screams my name through another orgasm. Two more deep thrusts and I roar her name through my own release, coming so hard I see exploding balls of light behind my closed eyelids.

I collapse, totally spent. But definitely worth it. I roll to my side as not to crush her and pull her close.

We lay there, silently catching our breaths. My mind is swirling with unwanted thoughts. The tightness in my chest pushes me into getting up and getting the hell out of dodge. I can’t do this. She’ll get hurt just by being involved with me, the VP of Crusaders MC and club’s inhouse assassin.

“Going so soon?” She leans up on one elbow, resting her chin on her palm, staring intently at me with a sleepy smile on her face.

“Yeah. Sorry, babe. I’ll call you okay?” I bend down, resting my hands on the bed and kissing her briefly on the lips.

“Okay.” She shrugs, turning around and burrowing under the disheveled sheets.

I walk out with a heavy heart, pausing just once to get a glimpse of her now sleeping form.

“I’m sorry, Alexis. I’m fucked up,” I whisper, knowing she won’t hear me.

I close her bedroom door with a quiet click and walk over to the couch where I had inadvertently hung my cut. I shrug into it before taking one last look around the room; knowing I won’t be coming back.

  Chapter 16

  Alexis

  1 week later

“Alexis, can you come in here please?”

I rub my temples, trying to ease the tension headache building up. This is the fifth time in one hour that my boss has called me in, and I’m ready to blow.

Walking into his office, situated inside the door behind my messy desk, I ask, “Can I help you, sir?”

I stand there, clipboard at the ready. I try to keep the irritation out of my voice and plaster a fake smile on my face.

“Mr. Wellbreed wants to see you in his office upstairs in ten minutes. I don’t know what it’s about so don’t bother asking,” he says, waving a dismissive hand in the air.

  “Yes, sir.”

I scurry out of the office like I have a rocket up my ass, hating that man with such passion that I’m surprised I’ve lasted here as long as I have. Dropping the clipboard on my desk as I rush by, I make a beeline for the stairs. No use using the elevator when it’s just two flights of stairs.

Mr. Wellbreed is the CEO of the company, top man who never ventures far from his office. My mind is cluttered with multiple thoughts. Why could he want to see a lowly employee like me? How does he even know about me?

I look down at my simple attire, checking for creases. My gray, pencil skirt is pressed to perfection and my crisp, plain, white shirt is tucked neatly into the waistband. I run my hands through my hair that runs halfway down my back, straight as a board and take a deep calming breath.

“Alexis! How are you?” Cherry, Mr. Hot Shot’s secretary says to me. She’s a young girl, much like myself, but two years younger. She’s a bubbly character with cherry red hair, hence her name, big, brown eyes and a slim figure. Her personality pulls you in, and you instantly love her.

“I’m okay, thank you. Looking for a new job though. Simon is like a boss from hell. He’s pissing me off like no one else can and is running me into the ground. I have a degree for fuck sake, and I’m a lowly paid assistant to a rotten asshole.” I sigh.

“Oh, chick. I wish I could help you.” She looks at me, pity or sympathy shining in her eyes. “Go knock, he’s been expecting you.”

“Catch you later, Cherry.” I smile at her as I walk past her desk, down a short corridor and toward the office of a man that rules the place.

  “Come in!” a man shouts.

I open the door slightly and poke my head around.

“Ah, Miss Newman. Come, take a seat,” he says.

He looks younger than I expected. Maybe late thirties, early forties. Bald, with a pudgy face and expressive eyes, freckles lightly scattered across his face, glasses perched on the end of his nose and a warm smile lighting up his features.

I sit down in one of the red, leather armchairs, back straight and eyes focused on his.

“It’s nice to finally meet you, Miss Newman.” Another smile graces his lips.

“Alexis, please. Miss Newman makes me feel old,” I tell him, chuckling nervously.

“Okay, Alexis. Do you have any idea why I called you in?” He twiddles his pen between his fingers, looking directly in my eyes.

“No, sir,” I say, biting the inside of my cheek.

“Well, Simon is being removed from my company. I’ve had one too many complaints against him regarding his attitude toward potential clients and yourself.”

I sit, stock still, eyes wide and eyebrows raised. How does he know about the way Simon speaks to me?

“I’m offering you his job. In other words, I’m personally promoting you to Client Adviser Manager. Your degree in business is exceptionally impressive, and I feel the job will be good for you as well as challenge you,” he continues.

“I don’t know what to say. I honestly wasn’t expecting this. Thank you, sir,” I stammer. I’ve been freakin’ promoted, I scream inwardly at myself.

“You’re welcome. Cherry will email you the contract for you to sign and return back. You’ll be able to move your stuff into the office next Monday. After signing and sending back the contract, take the rest of the week off, paid, of course.”

“Thank you, sir. You won’t regret your decision.” I stand from my chair and shake his hand.

After one last beaming smile at Mr. Wellbreed, I turn on my heel and leave the office with a spring in my step.

Cherry’s not at her desk when I walk past so I continue to the stairs to return to my station, and wait for the contract and getting the hell out of there for a week.

I take my phone out of the top drawer, wanting to text Cobra about my good news, but I haven’t spoken to him since he dropped me off at my apartment a week ago. I sigh, disappointed in falling for his charms.

I type a quick text to Lauren to let her know the good news. Just as I hit send, the email comes through, highlighting the next step in my career. I’m giddy with excitement, I’ve been waiting for months for the next step.

I skim through the contract and sign where needed. I waste no time in grabbing my shit, turning in the signed copy over to Cherry and hauling ass out of the building.

I open the door of my Audi and slide into the leather seat, shutting the door behind me. A ding from my purse alerts me of a new text and my heart skips a beat. Cobra?

I shove shit aside looking for my phone. Why do I have so much crap in here? Finally getting hold of the damn thing, I unlock it to find a text from Lauren.

Lauren: You go baby girl! Celebratory drinks this eve? L x

I laugh, somehow I just knew she was going to reply saying that. Too predictable.

Alexis: Sure, why the hell not. I deserve it. Come to mine. A x

I shove my phone back into my purse before turning the key in the ignition. Backing out of the tight parking space, I merge with the early afternoon traffic and turn up the music to sing alon
g on the drive home.

Lauren knocks on my door a little after seven. A bottle of fizz in one hand and a take out menu in the other, a massive smile spreading across her face. “Party for two?”

I move aside to let her in, laughing at her enthusiasm.

“I’m so pleased you finally got a promotion! You totally deserve it,” she says, emphasizing ‘finally’ like I had been there decades instead of actually eight months.

“Yeah, I know, my business degree might actually come in useful now.” I laugh, shaking my head.

We move to the quiet den and ready to order take-out and open the bubbly.

I grab some flutes from the kitchen and settle back into the cushions of my black, overly big, leather couch and switch the TV on. I flip through the movies on demand.

“What movie shall I put on?” I am debating between Pitch Perfect and Mean Girls.

  “Defintely Mean Girls,” she says.

“Mean Girls it is then.” I press play but turn the volume down, ready for some girl talk.

Sipping from my glass attentively, I look at Lauren who is glowing with happiness.

“Spill it.” I breath out a frustrated breath, knowing she is wanting to say something.

“Me and Champ are really getting along.” She smiles in some sort of memory.

Not sure I want to know the details of that thought. “Lucky you.” I look down into my glass, watching the bubbles pop against the sides.

“What’s up, Alexis? Shouldn’t you be happy, having a promotion and all?” She places her flute on the low, glass paned, coffee table and turns herself to face me.

“Yeah, I’m happy I have the promotion, ecstatic even. But Cobra hasn’t contacted me for a week now. He hasn’t replied to one of the four text messages I sent him. Has Champ said anything?” I can feel my eyes mist with unshed tears, dread pooling in the pit of stomach. I really did like Cobra. Really liked him.

“He hasn’t said anything about anyone or the club, sweety. Maybe he’s just super busy with biker shit.”

“Maybe. Or maybe he was second guessing us the whole time we were fucking the day he brought me home. His plan all along.” I wallow in self-pity. Am I not worth a little bit of effort?
