When Jill woke, the sun was shining in the windows. She rolled over and realized that James was already up. She put on her robe and headed up on deck, only to find James, Pricilla and Monica eating breakfast. She sat down beside James and rested her head on his shoulder. James asked if she had slept well and she said, “I always seem to sleep well out here on the ocean. The waves seem to rock me to sleep.” Pricilla giggled and said, “The waves washing up against the boat make me have to pee.” Monica elbowed her sister and said, “Not in front of James. You will embarrass him.” James laughed and said, “I am not that easily embarrassed. We all have to pee and poop.” Monica inhaled a breath of air, put her fingers over her mouth and said, “James. Not at the breakfast table!” Jill began to giggle and could not quit.
Ten days later, James, Jill, Pricilla and Monica sat in Angela’s office signing papers. When they signed the last paper, Angela said, “That is it. The four of you are now a family.” Pricilla, normally the stronger of the two sisters, began to cry. James put his hand on her shoulder and she moved over onto his lap, wrapped her arms around his neck and sobbed. After a few moments, James managed to wipe the tears from her eyes and talk to her. He asked, “Are these tears happy tears or sad tears?” Pricilla kissed him on the cheek and said, “Thank you James for loving me.”
James looked over at Monica, pulled her to him and wiped the tears running down her cheeks with his fingers. Soon both girls seemed able to control their emotions. They both walked over and hugged Jill. Monica looked into Jill’s eyes and said, “Can we go home now, Mother?” That was all Jill could bear and she began to cry. When James looked at Angela, she said, “I think some very good people have become family today.”
