“Tony!”
Kate was still smiling as they went out. In the waiting room, they reached the exit door at the same time as another couple with a baby.
Tony greeted the husband and introduced him. “This is Kirk, the dad I was telling you about.”
Startled, Kate recognized his wife from the clinic waiting room. Rosemary, too, seemed surprised. After they explained that they’d met before, they let the fathers walk ahead with the strollers. Their voices drifted back as they discussed their favorite child-development Web sites.
The other mom handed over a card. “Here’s my phone number. I’m setting up a new mothers’ group. If you’re interested, we’d love to have you join us.”
“I’d like that.” Kate made a mental note to call her tomorrow.
Rosemary gave a little cough. “If you don’t mind my mentioning it, I thought you were a surrogate.”
“Tony’s wife left him. He started coaching me, and we fell in love.” That summed it up, in Kate’s opinion.
“How romantic!” Rosemary’s eyes twinkled with delight. “Who could have imagined?”
“Certainly not me.”
When she’d agreed to be a surrogate, she hadn’t had a clue what she was letting herself in for, Kate could see now. How naive she’d been not to realize that plans rarely turned out the way you expected.
Sometimes, she mused as she reached the elevator and slipped her arm through Tony’s, they turned out infinitely better.
