Oracle Saving (The Phoenix Files Book 3) Page 40

“Get her out of her, Gabe. Ethan, get a muzzle on your woman,” he stated. “She’s lucky I like you, or I’d have her doing duty in some mine in Russia.”

Ethan practically had to drag her out of there. “Don’t do it, Elizabeth,” he whispered in her ear.

She wanted to say something in the worst way. She wanted to make that tiny dicked asshole bleed.

  Only she couldn’t.

  “Okay, I’m good.”

As they headed out, Gabe didn’t say anything. Once in the car, he still didn’t speak. When they were back at the Hoover Building, he finally addressed the issue.

Outside, in the parking lot, he faced them.

“She’s gone for good, right?” he asked.

  “Yes.”

“Do you really have all those files?”

She laughed. “No. There are no files, and if he had a freaking clue, he’d know that.”

  Gabe finally laughed.

“You’re a menace to all of us.”

“Do you think he’ll leave us alone?” she asked. “Is it finally over?”

Gabe shook his head. “I don’t know, Lyzee. I hope wherever they are, it’s far away.”

  She did too.

“Let’s get back to work,” Ethan said, holding her hand. “We have crazies to catch.”

Yeah, the luster was out of her eyes. It was hard to serve and protect when you worked for a corrupt asshole.

  Damn hard.

  Across DC

It was time to head out to find a casket for her brother. Jaxon hated every second of this, and she really hated that she was going to stand in a cemetery, stare at all the Marines in their dress blues, and not see him. How was she not supposed to cry?

In a way, she was saying goodbye to Jagger. Somehow, she thought it was going to be forever.

  Her gut was a knot.

This was going to be his funeral. Her child wouldn’t know about him, and there would be no cousins growing up together.

This was the end, and it broke her heart.

She hated the government and their secrecy. It sucked seven ways to Shitville.

“It’ll be okay,” Tony stated. “We’ll be okay,” he vowed. “I’ll get us through this. Our family will be with us the entire way.”

She didn’t have the faith he had.

  How could she?

She missed her brother. She’d called him about twenty times, needing to hear his voice. Instead, she simply left a message.

She hoped he always kept the line. At least, she wanted to know he was hearing her voice in case he missed her just as much.

  She loved him.

  God!

  Her heart was breaking.

As they headed out of their brownstone to get in their car, Tony saw it first.

  “What’s that?”

Jaxon focused on the box sitting on the hood of her jeep. It had a red bow on it.

“Did you do this to cheer me up?” she asked.

  “No, baby, it wasn’t me.”

She touched it with her finger. It was light.

Gently, she pulled on the ribbon and opened the black velvet box. Inside was a green jade elephant on a black cord.

  Her heart skipped.

Jaxon looked around, trying to find him.

Tony saw him first. At the end of the block, he stood there with a woman.

  He didn’t move.

“Oh, Jagger,” she whispered, as the tears began falling all over again. “I love you!” she yelled.

  She heard the words back.

  It helped a little.

Jaxon lifted her fingers to her lips and blew him a kiss. Then, she saluted him. She saw him catch the kiss, and then salute her back. It wasn’t his cocky two-finger salute.

  It was a full-blown one.

He didn’t hand those out often. When he was done, he raised his hand, and so did the woman beside him.

Then they disappeared around the corner.

“He’s always going to be around, Jaxy. You know your brother. He’s always going to be here.”

The tears continued. Inside the box, there was a tiny scrap of paper. She gently, and lovingly took it out. In her fingers, as they shook, she managed to get it open.

‘I love you. I’m with you. Forever. I’m going home, if you need me, you’ll find me there.’

She knew where he was heading.

  “He’ll be safe.”

Tony held his wife as she clutched the elephant and note in her hand. He knew they’d get through this, one way or another.

  He hoped.

“Let’s go, baby. We have a Marine to honor.”

  Yeah, they did.

And he was one hell of a Marine at that.

  One Week Later

When they finally were settled at Graymoor, no one knew where they were heading. They only knew they were going somewhere.

  Avalon was twitchy.

  That only meant one thing.

She was getting a call for help.

When she walked into the kitchen of the spacious manor, she was holding a map. Immediately, she focused on Lucian.

“You said you have property all over the world, right?” she asked.

“Yes, I do. My parents liked to travel, and my father hid a lot of his money in accounts all over the world. He liked to be prepared. Why?”

“I know where we have to go.”

Nate held out his hand to guide her to the table. “Where are we going, baby?”

“Here,” she said, unrolling the map on the table. Then, she touched one tiny little spot on it.

“There?” he asked. “The country or that specific place?” Lucian asked.

“The country. It’s full of psychics. It’s full of people needing our help, and we have to go.”

They stared down at the map.

  Well, that was that.

“Is this Phoenix file closed?” Luke asked. “Did we wrap it up?”

She scanned the faces in the room. “Yeah, this case is closed.”

“Is he coming back?” Nate asked worriedly. “Is Jagger really returning?”

She smiled. “If he’s smart, he won’t,” she stated.

  Wasn’t that the truth?

“But is he?” Maura asked. It wasn’t that she couldn’t keep them safe. It had everything to do with the man’s prayer. It had touched her.

  He’d touched her soul.

Avalon headed for the door. Once there, she was blind again. “Pack up team. We’re going to Ireland. Someone needs our help.”

  “IRELAND?” they all said.

Avalon turned in the doorway to face them.

“And Jagger?” Maura asked once again.

Avalon’s laughter filled the room from some silent joke. “If you were Jagger, and you wanted to hide in plain sight, where would you go?” she asked.

Nate immediately got it, and he began laughing.

Maura didn’t understand. “Where is he?”

“What do you call him when he really pisses you off?” Nate asked.

“I call him a stubborn Irish pain in my…”

  It registered.

“Son of a bitch! He’s in Ireland?”

  She laughed.

  Hell!

  They all did.

“Seriously?” Maura asked. “That was the freaking island he was talking about? Not a beach?”

  Apparently not.

“If you think about it, it’s logical. Jagger went home. Where else would the son of the Irish mob vacation or go to hide out in his down time?”

Avalon had a damn good point.

Once more, it proved one thing. Oracle, as always, was in control.
