Maybe Noelle would message Rachel back saying that she was coming into town next week, and Rachel would ask her to meet for coffee and then drag Lee along, and the two would hit it off, get married, and produce a series of bestselling children’s books that they would write and illustrate together. Of course, they would dedicate it to Rachel.
Maybe she would be able to figure out a way to make friends with Sharon Day without terrifying her. And perhaps along the way, she would figure out why Lee seemed so intent on making sure that she and Sharon got along.
Maybe Matt would stop hitting on her and start being her friend, and she would be able to go back to church without feeling nervous. Or maybe he’d ask her out directly instead of just smarming at her. Maybe then she’d say yes…or no.
Maybe she would meet more reasonable men like Detective Smith. Detective Ian Smith, according to his card. Men who put the ball in her court and then went about their business, respecting her right to reject them with dignity. Maybe when she got back from her trip, she would call him up, just to see.
Maybe her future held no big changes or surprises. Perhaps the rest of her life would be a continuation of the same: a long succession of years in which nothing disturbed the daily routine of coffee, books, workouts, church, breakfast foods, and friends.
Maybe she would come to the end and realize that the high-water mark she had been anticipating had already come and gone while she was so busy looking for it that she had not noticed it for what it was.
Maybe things would turn out that way.
Then again, maybe not.
Acknowledgments
So many people helped me write this book. I’m indebted to the following people for the following reasons:
To my parents for teaching me to read and write, work hard, and persevere in the face of rejection. I appreciate you both.
To Bethany for being my first and most critical reader, for engaging in endless dithering over plots and characters, and for partnering with the world’s most reluctant kickboxer. You truly have the patience of Job.
To Jodee for being Jodee.
To the rest of my beta-reading team: Marie, Tabatha, Janiece, Tom, Alissa, Karyn, and Anita. You each contributed unique and helpful feedback, and you encouraged me during periods of creative uncertainty. Bless you.
To Lisa for the blueberries and Pam for the tomatoes.
To Ray for picking me up when I fell down. This is not a metaphor.
To Megan Lee and Nicola Martinez at Pelican Book Group for hammering this story into book shape.
Last but not least, to Nathan, Dawn, and the Podlings for quite literally giving me room to write. Life here is more than duty—it’s a joy.
