Tales of Fantasy, Fables, and Fiction Page 23

by Thomas H. Tribble

Bourne wanted to laugh but thought better of it. "How are the others?" he asked.

Leena shook her head slightly and replied, "All will recover in time. Tassif was at death's threshold for some time but Strom responded quickly to the Master Cleric's remedies."

"Too quickly in fact. I had to keep him from pilfering some potions and such. He may never learn that stealing from the clergy is bad luck," Beneth said flatly. "But, we did procure these for you," the Elf continued as he handed two potion vials to Bourne. "You look like you could use them. How did you get so singed?" Bourne told them a quick version of what had happened with Moornam as he drank the potions. Beneth was none too surprised at Durrock's involvement with Avet but they were both surprised by the outcome of the encounter.

When the tale was finished Beneth said, "Deepheart got away with more than an equal share of the treasure but, from the looks of it, we'll not want for money for some time. Also, since he took that Half-Orcen wench with him, I suppose he earned every rilk of it. I doubt she will be easily bought off."

Leena agreed, "My intuition tells me you have not seen the last of her, Bourne. But, if you trusted Durrock enough to climb into his Holding Sack, I guess he will make good on his promise to rid her from you." Bourne just smiled and let himself have a moment of peace. In the morning they would rejoin the others and set out on their return to Norec. Bourne himself would visit the Lady Druces to deliver the Mace stone and receive her atonement, and then all would be well. That was the plan that he let himself believe in for the time being. Druces would honor their agreement at least. As for the rest of it, that remained to be seen.

  Some Sunny Day

  by Jeff Baker

My steaming blood pools through the glare on the icy road.

  "Is he alive?"

  Shallow, ragged breathing. Wet.

  "Barely."

  "Where's the ambulance?"

  "It won't matter."

  Cold.

  "He should have slowed down."

  So very cold.

  "Wonder what he's thinking?"

A long sigh escapes bruised lips.

  "Doesn't matter now."

Tell my wife I love her very much.
