Chapter One
His warm breath against the nape of her neck awakened her senses. As strong hands caressed her backside and teased through her lace panties, Kallie snuggled deeper into the cocoon of luxurious bedding. Fingers, now so familiar, sought entrance beneath the oversized T-shirt she’d worn to bed only a few short hours ago.
Powerless against the desire brewing inside of her, Kallie scarcely had time to mumble, “Good morning, Mr. Fogle,” before Hank wrapped his arms around her middle, rolling her over to face him. His lips silencing and claiming her, fueling her heat, brought tears to her eyes.
“Good morning, Mrs. Fogle.”
As the reality of Hank’s words hit her, she began to silently cry.
“Babe, why are you crying? What did I do?”
For a moment, Kallie couldn’t speak. So overcome with emotion, she wasn’t sure she could express what was wrong with her without feeling like a fool.
“You married me, Hank.”
“Yes, I did.”
“You really married me.”
Kallie couldn’t be sure what Hank was thinking, though he seemed truly perplexed.
“Do you regret it? I know it was sudden. But...”
“Sudden?” What an understatement. Two days ago, she and Hank had left her office for the make-up dinner he’d promised her. Now, as she lay nestled in his arms, her heart beating hard and fast, stomach churning, Kallie felt on the verge of a full-blown panic attack.
Kallie Masters couldn
t believe how much had changed in the past few days. Who would’ve thought an insane number of threats from the famous author, Stanton Foley, could’ve turned into a whirlwind romance and marriage to that very man? If it hadn’t been for his threats and her fleeing to The Smokies at the urging of her boss, Joseph Blake, Kallie never would’ve run into Hank Fogle, the real man behind the crazed antics of Stanton Foley. Of course, J.B, knew all along who Stanton really was. In fact, he’d orchestrated the little weekend getaway knowing that Hank would be there at the same time she was.
“Sudden is deciding to get pizza instead of Chinese. Getting married at the drive-thru chapel deep in The Smokies was practically reckless. Who is going to believe it? I mean, just look at how we started out. No one is going to believe we just happened to keep meeting by accident. Most folks would say you were stalking me. After what you did to my laptop and phone, those instances alone are enough to send any sane woman over the edge. Just because I know the truth, doesn’t mean everyone else will understand.”
“Really? What about your boss? He likes me. In fact, he basically set us up. So, the way I see it, there’s one person who will believe we ran off to The Smokies and got hitched.” He laughed but Kallie could sense a bit of apprehension.
“Look, I know and you know the whole laptop and phone thing were accidents. And I know it’s just part of your juvenile charm, but…”
“Juvenile?”
“You know what I mean.” Kallie swatted at him and giggled. “It’s all too good to be true. No one believes in coincidence or fate anymore. Hell, most people don’t even believe in soul-mates or any other such nonsense.”
“Really? Not even you, huh?”
Kallie knew how she must sound. The tone of Hank’s voice let her know he was concerned with where this was going. As she lay pressed beneath him, his body heat affecting her own, Kallie felt her stomach continue to flip-flop. Why was her stomach so upset?
“My love, I don’t think I’m making myself clear. It isn’t that I regret marrying you. In fact, quite the contrary. Right now, my biggest fear is that you will change your mind. I’ve been alone for a very long time. I gave up on marriage a long time ago and here we are. I’m afraid I will wake up and it will all be a dream.”
Again, tears streamed down her cheeks. Hank pressed his lips to the salty trails and kissed each one. He sat up, pulling her with him and placed his hands on either side of her face as he locked eyes with his wife. “Kal, you scare me like no other woman has ever had the power to do. You excite me, frustrate me and entertain me. When I think of you, my heart jumps. When you walk by me, your unique scent makes it very difficult to think clearly. I can only think about making love to you, like some sex-crazed teenager. As I watch you work, I am mesmerized. When I think back to the first moment we met, I remember the look on your face, how incredibly angry you were and I adore you even more for how passionate you are. When you lie beside me, peacefully asleep, I thank God that fate or whatever you want to call it threw us together. Sure, J.B. played a huge part in our meeting, but I’m the one who inadvertently destroyed your laptop and e-reader.”
With a pointed look, Kallie grinned as Hank continued. “I know. I also caused you to drop your phone over the edge of the ravine. Also an accident and, without any of those things happening, I never would’ve found the love of my life. Kallie, I’ve loved you from the moment you called me a Neanderthal. I don’t regret a moment of it and if I had to do it all over again, I would. I love you and I promise you that I will never leave you. I want to fill your life with happiness and I’ll do everything in my power to make you understand you’ll always be safe with me. Your electronic devices however, maybe not so much.”
Hank wore a sly grin as he placed his hands on either side of her face and his gaze bore into hers, “I adore you and I am amazed at your forgiving nature. Any other woman would’ve turned and ran. You, my love, are going to be stuck with me for a very long time.”
Before Hank could lean in for another kiss, Kallie shoved him off of her, dumping his naked body on the hardwood floor, and made a beeline for the bathroom. She locked the door just in time to expel the meager contents of her stomach into her honeymoon cabin’s toilet.
“Lovely,” she muttered before dry-heaving for another ten minutes.
* * * *
“What the hell?” His new wife had simply tossed him off of the bed and ran away without even a backwards glance. Though his backside would surely have a bruise, he couldn’t help but laugh at the woman he’d married. Hank knew every day would hold incredible surprises for the rest of their lives. With Kallie, he never knew what he was going to get and that one fact made him the happiest man alive. She’d made that abundantly clear from the moment they’d met. He couldn’t imagine going back to the lonely, meager existence he’d known before she’d walked into his life. If he hadn’t been at the pool that first day, they never would’ve met. For that, he really needed to send Kallie’s boss a huge thank you gift.
“Who knew the old man was a matchmaker?”
After a few moments of sitting on the floor reminiscing, he stood and dusted himself off. Obviously, his woman wasn’t coming back to check on him anytime soon. Maybe he was supposed to join her in the bathroom for a honeymoon shower? The thought of sliding his soap-covered hands of Kallie’s wet skin instantly brought his shaft to attention. With one purpose in mind, he strode to the bathroom door.
“Ow! Son-of-a!” Slamming into the locked pine door at full-force, Hank would now have one huge goose egg on his forehead.
Pressing his palm against his throbbing injury, Hank knocked on the wooden obstacle separating him from the love of his life. “Kal, why did you lock the door? Surely, we’re past these kinds of formalities. Besides, I have a big surprise for you, darlin’.” Hank’s southern drawl rolled off of his tongue.
Silence was the only thing that greeted him from the other side of the door. Maybe he shouldn’t have been so forceful. His wife most likely wanted to freshen up before a morning romp. Though he didn’t care if she hadn’t brushed her teeth or her hair, Kallie was a woman, after all and he couldn’t fault her for the effort she wanted to put into pleasing her husband.
Hank tapped again on the door and this time he heard his new, beautiful bride retching. Alarmed, he pounded on the door more forcefully. “Kallie! What’s wrong? Are you okay? Let me in!”
More silence. Not knowing if his wife was okay, Hank shot straight into panic mode. He slammed his shoulder into the door, intent on breaking it down if need be. His wife needed him! Again and again he rammed, but the pine monstrosity wouldn’t budge. Hank’s shoulder was now a fiery-red and sore appendage, but he refused to stop. Backing up to the middle of the bedroom, Hank, in all of his naked glory, charged.
“Kallie, I’m coming. Don’t worry.”
Bracing himself for the hit, Hank hunkered down and barreled right into his wife who was now standing in the doorway. He tackled her and they both fell into a heap on top of the settee in the outer changing room.
* * * *
Moaning and groaning, Kallie tried to wiggle out from beneath her husband’s long form.
“Oh, Kal. Are you okay? Did I hurt you? Please say I didn’t.”
“Can’t…”
“Speak to me, Kallie.”
“Can’t…”
Yelling now, “Kallie, what’s wrong?”
She shoved at him with all of her might. “I can’t breathe, you big klutz!”
“Oh.”
Hank released his wife and wiggled off of her. Kallie lay there, breathing heavily, grateful for the oxygen entering her lungs. Still holding the wet washcloth she’d been using to clean her face after she’d gotten sick, she wiped at her forehead. Luckily, Kallie had also brushed her teeth before her husband crashed into her.
“I’m so sorry, Kal. I was so worried about you and I didn’t know if you were alive or dead. Why didn’t you answer me?”
Rolling her eyes, Kallie tried to re
member her husband was only trying to help. His ‘all or nothing’ attitude was what first attracted her to him and though she lay flat on her back due to his caveman mentality, she couldn’t help but laugh. He had meant well, but sometimes, he was like a bull in a China shop!
After she’d tossed him to the floor, he’d run to her rescue. Naked, to her rescue! Now, fits of uncontrollable giggles sent tears rolling down her face. Kallie looked at her husband who sat there staring at her in apparent shock and that sent her over the edge of hysteria.
“You…” she pointed at his chest, “you…naked…oh my goodness…”
Hank’s jaw dropped but he said nothing.
Just as Kallie was about to break into another hysterical laughing rant, for the first time she looked into her husband’s eyes. He sat before her, naked and vulnerable while she’d carried on like a loon. Suddenly, the situation was no longer funny. This man, this incredibly brazen man had truly believed he needed to save his wife and his eyes told her all she needed to know about him. Even after his long, heartfelt speech about loving her, she wasn’t sure she’d believed him. Now, she felt relief and love pour from her husband’s gaze and it enveloped her heart, covering her bared skin in goose bumps.
How many men would try to bust down a door because they’d heard their wife getting sick? Not many, she supposed. She felt like such a bitch. Why had she laughed at him? How could she have done such a thing? She should’ve hugged him before asking him to move so she could breathe. After all, she’d tossed him onto the floor, which had been the catalyst to their little mishap. Why didn’t she ask if he was hurt? And why was she sitting here thinking when she should launch herself into his arms and revel in his nakedness? What was holding her back?
