Flynn Page 10

A tear fell onto the page, smudging some of the ink. Natalie quickly handed it to Emily hoping she wouldn’t ruin it because maybe Emily would want to keep it.

“Don’t cry mommy,” said Emily wiping away her tears. “You’ve got me now.”

She turned to look at Flynn who also had tears streaming down his face. If Jon hadn’t sent her on this journey to find their baby, she wouldn’t have met this wonderful man. It was almost as if he’d given her two gifts, first a child, and then another man to love.

“Does daddy have brothers and sisters?”

“He has a sister, and she has two children. You think you might like to meet them someday?”

  Emily nodded.

“Oh and before I forget I want you to have these.”

Natalie took off the earrings—the same ones Emily had admired the first time they’d met.

“These are yours now. They belonged to your great grandmother on your granddad’s side of the family.”

“I don’t have holes in my ears.”

“Then we’ll have to do something about that,” said Flynn.

Emily put out her arms and squeezed her like she was never going to let her go. And she hoped she never would.

  Chapter Fourteen

  “How do I look?”

Flynn turned to Emily after putting on his new shirt.

  “Okay.”

“Just okay? Come on now. I have to look more than that, or your mom might not accept our proposal.”

  “Why do you need me?”

“Because we’re a team. We always have been, always will be.”

  “I guess.”

“Quickly, I hear her car pulling up. Now remember you get the door, and I’ll be waiting with the flowers and the ring.”

Emily nodded and ran to the door.

“Brrrr, it’s freezing out there. When’s spring going to arrive?” Flynn heard her asking Emily.

“Dad’s on his knees so you better hurry because he gets pains and aches in them now that he’s old.”

Flynn laughed but tried to muffle the sound with his hand over his mouth.

“What’s he doing on his knees?”

Natalie stepped in the room and smiled as he held up the ring. Emily rushed to his side and got on her knees too.

“Emily and I would like you to be our wife and mother.”

Natalie held her chest. “What can I say? This has to be the cutest proposal in history.”

Flynn nudged Emily’s arm and she burst out laughing. “Did you hear that? We’re cute.”

“Do I get to be the bridesmaid again?” asked Emily.

“Hey young lady, your mother hasn’t accepted yet.”

Natalie walked over to them and knelt down, putting her arms around both their shoulders.

“How could any girl turn down a sexy cowboy and the cutest girl in the world?”

  Epilogue

Her mother had been right about the shooting star.

Marie sat at the table and watched as Mr. and Mrs. Flynn Malone took to the floor for their first dance as husband and wife. Emily stood on the side clapping along to the music. She’d met her cousins for the first time and her aunt. And yes, even her grandparents who Flynn had eaten humble pie and asked if they’d come along to the wedding.

She looked over at Shane and Lacey. They were so in love and would be parents in the fall. So much was changing and in a very good way.

Now she could focus her attention on her last remaining single son, Rory. He stood watching all the couples now milling around on the dance floor. She saw longing in his face. Longing for a woman that he could call his own. Just the other week she’d brought up the topic of him maybe settling down, but he’d insisted he was too old, too set in his ways for a wife and family. But a mother knows best.

Marie knew that somewhere out there was the perfect woman for Rory Malone.
