The question was… Was it the rogue or the so-called good faction? How much overlap was there? And how “good” were they really? She didn’t think they were going to be able to avoid taking sides and that was never a positive thing.
“I’ve got it.”
Everyone’s attention turned to Josh who had a grin on his face. He’d been playing with that damn cell phone for over an hour.
Ellis unclipped his own seat belt and sat next to Josh. “Is it a file? Pictures?”
Josh pulled out his ear bud. “It’s a recording. A phone conversation between Archer Caldwell and some guy who isn’t named. They’re talking about the plans to kill the men and the backup plans if they somehow survive. They did mention someone else though. They said the name Jensen.”
Peyton’s sucked-in breath was audible to the entire group. Her already fair skin had paled and she’d grabbed the armrests on the seat. “What did you say that name was?”
“Jensen,” Josh replied. “No last name though.”
“Let me hear it,” she said quietly. Willow had a gut feeling that Peyton knew this Jensen person. It would be a plus when it came time to talk to him.
Josh cued up the recording and held out the cell phone so everyone could hear. The first voice was easily recognizable as Archer’s.
Did you talk to him? Is everything set?
An unknown man’s voice came next.
Yeah, everything is a go. Greg and I are having lunch together. The chef has been paid half up front with half when he finishes the job.
Archer: If this doesn’t work…
Unknown male: It’ll work. He’s incredibly allergic. He won’t make it to the emergency room with the amount the chef is going to put in the food. It’s a done deal.
Archer: It has to be finished on that day. If it doesn’t work, you’ll need to step in at the hospital. Make it look like an accident though. Maybe suffocation.
Unknown male: I’ve got this. Greg won’t survive.
Archer: What about his wife? What if she wants to come along with you to the restaurant?
Unknown male
Archer: Call me when it’s done. Greg will be the first because of the time difference, then Frank, and Alex last. His car accident is tonight, the stupid drunk bastard.
Unknown male: I’ll call you. Is there anything else you need?
Archer: Yes, don’t fuck up.
Willow shuddered in revulsion, listening to these two men talk about murder as if they were planning a golf outing. Alex had been a drunk and drug addict but he hadn’t deserved to be murdered. No one deserved that.
Ellis had moved back next to Peyton, his arm around her shoulders. “Do you know that voice? Do you know Jensen?”
Sniffling, a tear carved a path down her cheek. “I don’t know the other voice but I have a brother named Jensen. God, he was in on Greg’s death.”
Willow reached across the aisle and placed her hand on Peyton’s arm, although Ellis had a hold of the woman who was visibly shaken, her blue eyes huge in her wan face.
“Not necessarily,” Willow replied firmly, wanting desperately to do something, anything, to make her friend feel better. She’d been through so much in the past several weeks. “These guys just say that they’ll get Jensen to handle you if you want to go to lunch. That doesn’t mean he’s in on the plot. It only means that he might be friends with these assholes. Don’t go there until you have proof. Don’t do that to yourself.”
Swiping at her wet cheeks, Peyton took a deep breath. “He’s in London, which is quite convenient because that’s also where Greg’s other family lives. I think Ellis and I should take a trip there and talk to them. See what they know.”
Josh nodded. “That’s a good idea. We’ll all go.”
Ellis was already shaking his head no. “Someone has to stay in the states and keep an eye on Holmwood and Evandria. With Caldwell out as president, there’s going to be a huge struggle for control of the organization. We need you guys to monitor the situation, plus you might want to look for the other person in that recording. He had an American accent so he’s probably from here, maybe even Midnight Blue Beach.”
“Which we just left,” Chase added. “Because it’s not safe, supposedly.”
Ellis grinned. “I didn’t say it would be easy.”
Josh tucked the cell phone into the pocket of his carryon. “Let’s get to Williamsburg and get settled, then we can figure out what to do from there. Maybe we can make a visit to that senator friend of yours, Chase. He might know who’s vying for control.”
“If he’ll talk,” Chase warned. “He’s loyal to the mission and he owes his entire career to them. He won’t turn easily.”
“Then we all have our assignments.” Ellis finished pouring a ginger ale for Peyton. “We’ll go to London and get back as quickly as we can. You guys will keep track of the status of Evandria and at the same time stay safe. That’s enough for all of us to do.”
Stay alive. Catch more killers. Willow wanted a future with Josh and if this was the only way to get it then so be it. It was time to end the war in Evandria.
