Buddy snorted a laugh. “Right. You’ve been married five minutes, and it’s the greatest thing in the world.”
“Yes, it is.”
Coach gathered the team in the locker room half an hour before game time. “This year we’ve got our work cut out for us. Not just the usual with The Gamblers and the Demons, but L. A. has traded for some big guys for their defensive line. We can’t afford any more injuries, so be careful out there.”
Flanked by Max Jenkins, Bullhorn Brodsky, Caleb Turner, and Buddy, Griff jogged out to the gridiron. The team stood quietly. They held their helmets. He and Buddy put their right hands over their hearts, as they prepared to sing along with the national anthem. An announcement came on the loud speaker.
“Today, it’s an honor and a privilege to welcome a fabulous new singer to do the National Anthem. We are honored to have Emerald with us.”
The applause was deafening.
Buddy’s head snapped up. He looked at Griff then at the singer. “What the fuck is she doing here?”
