Lewis: The McCade Dragon –Erotic Paranormal Romance Page 17

by Kathi S. Barton

  “I can make sure that they not only have gardens to work in, but that they are cared for as well.” Micky’s parents lived in a glen that was being overrun by development. It was killing them, but no matter how many times she’d gone there to help them move on, she’d been ignored. No, not ignored, but shunned. “I will not tell them who is helping them until the time is right.”

  “They won’t go if you tell them.” Caelin nodded. “All right. I don’t know why I’m trusting you, but I am. You do this for me, and I’ll agree to help this man for you.”

  Taking his hand when offered, she felt the surge of more magic fill her and the feeling of moving. When she opened her eyes, she was alone in a dark room. There were things going on behind the door to her left, but she stood still. She had no idea what she was in here for.

  “He will come to you in a moment or two. Do not try and kill him. His name is Vance. He’s not trusting either, but you will need to listen to him. For if you don’t, all will be lost.” She asked him if he was going to get them killed. “No. He is, like you, an immortal.”

  ~~~
  Vance opened the door to the little room and stood there until the men who were walking the halls moved on. Before he could make good on his escape, he felt the presence of something behind him. Turning with his gun drawn, he saw her shining in the corner. The small wave she gave him had him cursing under his breath.
  “Yeah, I know just how you feel. I’m Micky, by the way. I was sent here by Caelin to help get your ass out of this jam. Whatever the fuck you’re into, anyway. And where are we?” Vance didn’t need this. But he was in a little bit of a jam. “Are you stupid? Or just ignoring me?”
  “Neither. I’m trying to figure out if I need to kill you or use you.” He looked her up and down and felt his cock stretch. “Both sound good right now.”
  She had a knife at his throat before he moved. At least he thought it was a knife. The wings behind her explained the sparkling shit, but not what she was doing here. He put his finger on the blade to move it and felt it prick his skin. This wasn’t going to end well for him if she hurt him more.
  “I’m here to help you. I was told that you’d have to explain things so that I could.” He said that he needed to get out of there before they were caught in order to make that happen. “Why didn’t you say so?”
  He didn’t know where they were, but he could see the ocean right outside the window he was by. Not only was there a great view of it, but he could see ships in the distance and knew they were shrimping. Looking around the place, he knew that they were in a hotel, but not how they’d gotten there. Micky was sitting on the couch eating an apple. When she tossed him one, he caught it and sat down across from her. Things were too weird for him to compile any questions for the moment. So he ate the apple.
  “I’m a faerie. Rogue, if you need to know that. But I have a lot of magic that can help you should you be okay with that. And for the record, I don’t usually ask, but Caelin is doing me a favor, and I told him I’d help. What were we doing in the White House, and why was the Secret Service told to look for you and shoot you on sight?” Vance said he wasn’t aware they knew he was there. “Yes. That guy of yours, I think his name was Sam...no, sorry, Samuel, he gave you up two days ago. Want another apple?”
  “He’d not do that.” She nodded and tossed him an apple. “How do you know that? I mean, last time I saw him, he was at the hotel where we were staying.”
  “They got to him. And he didn’t give you up easily. They did things to him that I’ve not seen used on humans before. Peeled his skin off in the most delicate of places. But he didn’t tell them everything, only that you were coming for them. The president is looking for me too, but for a different reason.” Vance nodded. “We have a mutual friend too. Jeff Burner. He goes by Prick Stick. I just sent him a lot of information. Information that apparently is coming, or has gotten, to you.”
  “No, nothing yet. But then I’m not at my hiding place.” She moved to the computer that he wasn’t sure was there before, and when she sat down, he stood behind her. When she brought it all up and moved out of the chair, he sat down. “This is what I needed. You got it?”
  “Yes. I’m better at getting in and out of computers than he is sometimes.” She was eating again, more fruit. He asked her what she’d meant by being rogue. “My family has disowned me. Mostly because of what I do…kill when I need to, and I have, a lot. Also, I’m not very nice. Ever.”
  “Yeah, right there with you on that one.” He read over a few more pages, and asked her when she’d gotten this. She told him earlier that morning. “This has information on Samuel, and that he’s being taken in for questioning.”
  “He’s dead, as I said. They did things to him that wouldn’t have let him last long.” Standing up, he asked her if she was leaving. “No. I thought I’d take a dip in the water here. I don’t get places like this often. If you need me, just yell. Or join me. There is shit you can put on in the bedroom on your left. Mine is back here.”
  When he finished the report, she was on the beach that was perhaps ten yards from the door he was looking out of. Her hair was wet, and he could see that instead of being red, like he knew it to be, it was darker because of the water. Thinking about Caelin and the reasons for sending her here, he wasn’t really surprised when he appeared beside him.
  “She’s your mate. I had to send her to you so that you two could work this out.” Vance said he’d figured that out the moment he’d found himself in the closet with her. “I thought you might. But she can help you. And she can be trusted. I don’t know how long it will take for either of you to get to that point on your own, but she’s there for you to work with.”
  “What’s with the fruit? I understand that she’s a faerie, but they don’t have to eat all the time.” He said that she’d been shot that morning. “And do I want to know by who?”
  “The president is after her. He’s found out about her abilities, none of them to do with her computer skills. He wishes to use her as a weapon.” Vance looked down at his own weapon. “Lilac can help you both now. But you should know that Micky is much stronger.”
  “Sending her here with me, isn’t that breaking the rules? I mean, what if we’re both caught up in this? Then what?” Caelin said nothing. “She’s the key, isn’t she? The one that not only saves us all, but me in the process. What if I don’t want to be saved? Have you thought of that?”
  “I have, and you do need to be saved.” Vance snorted. “Yes, she can do that as well as you. But without you two coming together, I mean in a working relationship, this will end badly for a great many people. And the man that she killed…well, she raped his mind and found out about you too. They’re searching for the two of you, but for different reasons.”
  “She said that.” Caelin nodded but didn’t say what her reasons were. Abilities could mean just about anything. “You said she was strong. What are her abilities, other than she can move through space and time in a second?”
  “Watch her.”
  They did, both of them, when she stood up, after blowing a kiss his way, she morphed into herself again…a faerie with red wings and red sparks. While Vance watched her, she raised her arms above her head and he staggered back. The blades that appeared on every part of her flesh had him mesmerized. Then the blades shot toward them both, hitting everything around them without once touching either of them.
  Turning around, he saw a perfect outline of the two of them, but he and Caelin hadn’t been touched by the thousands of shards that he could see now were glass, not blades. Vance looked at her again when she said his name.
  “Come join me. The water is fantastic. Then when we’ve enjoyed it for a little while, we’ll go take care of the monsters in the White House.”
  Vance looked at Caelin, but he was gone. In his place was a basket of fruit, as well as a note. Picking it up, he read the words there before bursting out in laughter.
  Tread carefully.
