“This man…” she points to him, “… if you can call him that, ruined my life. I know the Gentlemen are supposed to honor women. To cherish women. To make sure they’re looked after. You may cause havoc and do all kinds of other illegal shit, but women, that’s the one thing you hold in high regard, correct?” Chloe asks.
The rest of the Gentlemen nod. “Correct, my dear. Go on.”
“This man, this high ranking official in your club, is an abuser. He’s my uncle. He was supposed to look out for me. Take care of me. Love me. When my parents died, he took guardianship of me, but all he was capable of doing was to sneak into my bedroom at n-night…” My skin crawls as I look away from him, clenching my eyes tight upon hearing her voice break. “He would warn me not to make a sound, so I wouldn’t wake Tremor. He told me that this is the way it was supposed to be. That if I told anyone, especially Tremor, that he wouldn’t understand, that he would hate me and never talk to me again. He made me believe his sexual abuse was my fault. That I was worthless and made it happen. Time and time again.”
Opening my eyes, my stomach rolls as my jaw clenches so tight I hear my teeth grinding. I want to rush over there and tear him limb from limb. I watch the stunned faces of my brothers. They know this happened to her, but hearing it from her mouth is absolutely shocking. Still this is cathartic for Chloe, so I need to let her get through this.
“So my uncle, the man who I’m sure had something to do with my parents’ deaths, the man who abused me for years and still tries to, to this very day, is standing before you now. A man of your club. A man of your leadership. Tell me… is he a man you should be looking up to? A man who can’t follow your rules and guidelines? A man who wants to end his own son’s life for avenging his cousin’s innocence? If you’re all on Frank’s side, then go ahead, try to take Tremor out. I dare you because I’ll be the first person to grab the nearest gun and lay my life down for my cousin. Because I’ll tell you now, this man, this leader before you, is not worth anyone’s life. Not even his own.”
I turn finally finding the courage to glance at Chloe. The strength and determination she holds in her stature is so empowering that it causes me to stand taller puffing out my chest in defiance as well. My brothers all do the same showing their support. I can’t help but notice the old ladies tearing up, but even through their tears, they too stand tall. United we are defiant. Fuck anyone who comes in trying to tear this family apart. If they’re going to stand with Frank, then so be it, but I sure as hell am going to be the first one to pull the damn trigger. Because fuck only knows he deserves a goddamn bullet for what he’s done to my gorgeous cousin.
“This is bullshit!” Frank throws his hands in the air. “I did nothing but love you like an uncle should.”
The other Gentleman steps forward rubbing his chin while sneering at Frank. “That is a horrible tale you tell, my girl. But we’ve known Frank for a long time. Why should we take your word over his?”
Neala steps forward making us all turn our heads to look at her. I tense up wondering what the fuck she’s doing as she takes a deep breath. “Then take my word that she’s telling the truth. I saw Frank meet with our ex-club member, Renegade, at the Auto Mechanical Skills Contest where your fellow men attended. Renegade beat me, he tried to…” She grits her teeth as my stomach flips in anger. “These men you’re allowing in your club are a bane on your very foundations. Don’t let Frank’s obscene behavior be allowed to be forgiven… Renegade’s wasn’t, so Frank should pay for his sins against an innocent woman, too.”
Frank scoffs. “Renegade was a loose cannon. I knew that. You can’t compare me to him! The only reason I was meeting with him all this time was to keep tabs on Tremor.”
My entire body stiffens as I shift, but a hand is placed on my chest to stop me from rushing toward him. I don’t even know whose it is as I’m in a blinding rage while the other Gentleman steps forward signaling to another. They grab Frank wrenching his arms behind him, making him fall to his knees. He groans out in pain as he pants heavily through his nose, realization perhaps sinking in that he might just be in deep fucking shit.
“Chloe, was it?” the Gentleman asks. She nods. “You and your friend were right, we don’t take kindly to any woman being harmed in any way. Frank doing this…” he cracks his neck to the side, “… is unspeakable.”
“What? Mac? You can’t be serious. I’ve worked alongside you for fucking years. You can’t do this to me!”
The Gentleman that I now know as Mac curls up his lip and thrusts his closed fist straight into my father’s face. Frank slumps as blood pools from a large cut just under his eyebrow. Mac pulls his red handkerchief from his pocket wiping the blood from his knuckles, then looks at Chloe. “You have three options here, dear. We can take Frank and deal with him within our hierarchy. Tremor can dispose of him, or, my sweet, you may have the honor.”
I tense up. I don’t know how I feel about that. Chloe isn’t in this fight. I don’t like the idea of her taking a life, but while I’m busy thinking things through in my mind, Chloe reaches out grabbing my gun from my hand, aiming it at Frank’s head. “I dreamed of you dying all those nights you abused me.” Then without pause or hesitation, she pulls the trigger. Her arms recoils back dramatically as she shoots then follows it up another two times. Blood begins to flow onto the clubroom floor as I turn, wide-eyed at Chloe.
But all I see is the biggest fucking grin on her face.
I wasn’t ready for what she was able to so easily do as they drop Frank’s dead body to the floor in a heap. She lets off a small nervous giggle as she hands me my gun like it’s no big deal.
Slowly, I take it from her hand as Torque raises his brow at me with a smirk. “Fuck,” I murmur.
“That was kinda hot,” Zane mumbles glancing at Chloe.
She grins winking at him as the sound of babies crying echoes from down the hall as Sparx shuffles on her feet while the Gentlemen look at her.
“Those your babies?” Mac asks.
She nods hesitantly like she’s unsure what he’s going to do with that information.
He tilts his head toward the hall. She looks at Trax who winks at her as she rushes off down the hall toward their twins.
“I apologize for sweeping in like this. We were… misinformed. On another note, we sent Frank in to gain your attention before we entered. We were unaware that Neala would be harmed in the process. As you know, this is not how we operate, and her captivity in the car was all Frank’s doing.”
Neala nods. “So it was him? As I exited the gate, the explosion went off behind me, so I stopped my car to check on you guys, and then a man in a black balaclava jumped me. He tied me to the steering wheel…” she pauses with a tear forming in her eye, “… the flames from the gate caught the rear of my car alight, then he took off, obviously to hide for his reveal.”
Mac shakes his head with a heavy sigh. “I apologize again, Neala. I’m just grateful that this man…” he points at me, “… was there to help you through. Though, we would have gotten you out on our way in. You have my word on that.”
“Thank you,” Neala relays.
Mac bows his head, turns to Torque and continues, “We will pay for any damage. We’ll be in touch regarding compensation and the collection of our fallen comrades.” He signals to the small number of remaining Gentlemen, and they quickly scatter exiting the clubhouse.
Shock rains down over us all as I rush along with everyone else to gather around Chloe. I take her up into my arms hugging her with a laugh. I wonder if she’s either frazzled or ecstatic by what she’s just done.
It’s not every day you kill someone for the first time!
PYRO
I pull back as everyone looks at her. “Chloe, are you okay?”
She exhales looking from me to Torque then back at me. “That was… kind of epic.”
I snort as Torque rolls his eyes. “Jesus Christ, she’s a maniac.”
I hold her tighter looking at her. “Chloe, ho
nestly, you okay?”
She takes a deep breath straightening her shoulders. “It was kind of a rush. I mean I don’t plan on shooting guys in the head often, only when they’ve wronged me.”
Chains chuckles. “So, you better not get on her bad side then, Pyro.” We all laugh as he stumbles over holding his arm. “Little help here, doc?” he calls out as we look to his hand holding his bicep to see it oozing blood.
“He’s hit,” I call out as Kline rushes out from behind the bar quicker than I’ve seen her move in a long time. She pushes Chloe and me out of the way as she rushes to Chains, forcing him down on a stool by the bar.
She groans as she yanks his hand away from his bicep to assess the wound. “Goddammit, Chains, you’re always getting fucking hurt. When will you stop putting yourself in harm’s way and try to look after yourself for fucking once? You always have these damn injuries. One day you’re going to have something so damn bad, I’m not going to be able to fix you.”
“Woman…” He chuckles as she moves in between his legs trying to get the right angle to clean up his wound while Foxy pulls out the first-aid kit from under the bar. Kline goes about grabbing her tools then starts working as he stares up at her in awe.
People start to move around trying to figure out what the hell to do about the damn mess in here, but I move over to Neala, and we stay to watch Kline with Chains.
“Don’t woman me. How many times have I told you, you goddamn brute. Now fucking keep still before I give you a sedative to knock you out.”
He chuckles again. I glance at Neala as she looks at me obviously noticing the same thing I am as we watch Chains. His eyes lingering on Kline in a way they shouldn’t.
“Bex…”
“What? You’re so damn needy. We’ve just been in a gunfight, I was held captive, I’m trying to pull a bullet from your bicep and you want to talk about the—”
He suddenly leans up, his free hand wrapping into her hair. He pulls her mouth to his planting a giant kiss on her lips.
My mouth drops open as I stop stock still.
She doesn’t pull away.
Instead, she kisses him back hesitantly in the clubroom full of brothers who have now stopped and are all watching them awkwardly while we stand here not knowing what to do.
As if to realize what’s going on, Kline pulls back abruptly kind of breathless, her face contorted like she has all kinds of emotions running through her right now. But her hand comes up so fast I hardly have time to realize what’s going on, before her open palm slaps Chains across his face so hard and fast his head snaps to the side with a resounding thwack.
Everyone gasps as we stand watching.
Kline screws up her face backing away from Chains as she pants heavily for frantic breaths. “You’re my fucking foster brother, Chains. What the hell was that?”
