  It’s important to acknowledge the Wurundjeri people, who’ve lived through so many fires before us—true owners of country we’re lucky to call home. Thanks also to all the people raising awareness about and tackling climate change: every day and in every way.

  For all the refugees, everywhere—people like you and me, who’ve also lost a home, often so much more—this is also for you and the unimaginable strength you show seeking safety: despite the unethical barriers and policies in place all over the world, particularly in Australia today.

  Thanks to the University of Melbourne’s Creative Writing program, especially to Emmett Stinson for overseeing a much smaller version of this collection (and for giving it hope).   Earlier versions of the following stories have been previously published: ‘Stay / Go’ in Seizure, ‘Porch Light’ in Meanjin, ‘Burning the House’ in Stilts Magazine, ‘Blue’ in Bide Magazine, ‘Aftermath’ in Lip Magazine, and ‘Flight Path’ on the Wheeler Centre website.

  ‘Sticks’ won the 2017 Melbourne Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Award for Short Fiction. ‘Aftermath’ placed in the 2017 Rachel Funari Prize for Fiction. ‘Clearing’ was shortlisted in the 2018 Peter Carey Short Story Award. ‘Highway’ was shortlisted in the 2018 Rachel Funari Prize for Fiction. ‘Saltwater’ was commended in the 2018 Hope Prize and published in the Simon & Schuster collection of the same year, Hope Shines.

  Additionally, the collection was shortlisted in the 2018 Penguin Random House Australia Literary Prize. Its beginnings were recognised in the 2015 Victorian Premier’s Unpublished Manuscript Award, the 2015 Richell Prize, and the 2017 Kill Your Darlings Unpublished Manuscript Award.

  Finally, part of the collection was completed during a Hot Desk Fellowship at the Wheeler Centre, Melbourne.
