“And you think you can trust us? You think you’ll be safe here? I’m a Shadow Walker. You’re a Light Walker.” I said it slowly, because she seemed to be missing the fact that we just didn’t get along. “Getting protection from your own people would probably be better for you both.”
“I don’t know if I can trust you, but I know that I can’t trust my people, not when I don’t know who to trust. Any one of them could be plotting against my father.”
Goldie—Layli—was brave. Insane, but still brave. And she was still lying. Her story was plausible enough, but she was hiding something. I couldn’t exactly read Light Walker thoughts while I was shadowed, but I could get a feel of their emotions, at least partially. Hers were…off. She was keeping something from me.
“She’s right, Layli. We can’t trust them. They’re nothing but animals—”
“Watch what you say. You’ve been warned once already,” I said, speaking low. “We’ve been nice, letting you get this far without hassle. We don’t have to be so nice on your trip home.” It was mostly a bluff. We wouldn’t hurt them—unprovoked—but it didn’t mean he would leave here without any scratches if he kept running his mouth. As much as causing one of those scratches would please me, I really wanted to avoid more fighting for as long as possible. We didn’t need more of them coming out here. I motioned for my friends. “Let’s go.”
“Don’t turn your back on me, Shadow Walker.”
