Nelly held onto his hair, leaned her head back, and enjoyed the ride.

  Chapter Fourteen

There were certain advantages to the Akait having a humanoid form. Besides sex, that was.

Nelly sat up from where she had been asleep in the medical sector of the city, lowering her elevated feet as she slid off the fur bed and stood unsteadily. Her stomach was rounding out in front of her, firm with new life.

Besides sex and cuddling, it seemed that they were compatible enough for her to have become pregnant. She was one of the first of the colony, and she had Rornak had hurried to have the official ceremony to actually pronounce them as mates. By then, every single dragon knew that she was with child. The teasing was endless!

The normal sorts of discomfort for expecting mothers came with an additional price, however. The child was snug and content inside her but its temperature was wreaking havoc on her insides. They were equipped to deal with it, and the general consensus was that early-induced labor in a few months would be the best way to keep her and their child healthy and safe.

Quite a few things had happened in the months since they beat back the invaders, though her involvement would have to be put on hold due to her condition. The first part of the ship she had building had been brought back to the city, where she worked on it with steady assistance from her mate and his council when they were not otherwise occupied. The need for it was gone, but Rornak still insisted upon it.

“We never know when we may need it in the future,” he said. His expression had been grim at the time. “Our lesson is learned.”

So it was, and she fully agreed. And she was looking forward to having this kid so she could get back to work and stop being treated like an invalid!

Another expectant mother passed her on her way out, and they exchanged pleasantries. This new generation would live in peace, exactly as Rornak wanted.

Exactly the way it should be.

Many of the main structures had been modified to allow her ease of motion, especially now, and so it was with little effort that Nelly clambered from the medical section of the city to the business area. Repairs were slow-going and many things would not be able to be restored for quite a long time. Their numbers were so thin that they could not rebuild, keep a steady economy of jobs and services running, and also supply those services. Not all at once. Not yet. And so, Rornak had decreed that all would be shared evenly amongst everyone for now.

Where was he, anyway? He was supposed to visit her a bit ago but he never showed up.

It wasn’t really a question that needed answering, though. She knew exactly where he would be.

She worked her way to the point where all the different areas of the city met: the catacombs. All were united in death, Rornak said. That was exactly how it should be.

And she found him there, standing before the great opening that led very deep in the earth.

“Rory?” she asked softly, trying not to startle him.

It didn’t work, because he practically took flight before realizing who it was and calming himself again. “Nelly!” he scolded, turning around and running a hand through his hair. “What are you doing? You’re supposed to be resting!”

“I got tired of looking at a ceiling,” she replied softly. “Are you mad?”

“No,” her mate sighed and came to her to wrap his arms about her shoulders. They leaned their heads together and held onto each other for a long moment, before he pulled back and looked into her face. “Are you sure this is where you want to be?”

She knew what he was really asking but she didn’t want to give the answer to him when he was being like this. Instead, she just smiled and stroked her stomach. “I think if I went back home, giving birth to a dragon might be a bad thing.”

He didn’t laugh and just turned his head away. “All you had there is destroyed now, isn’t it? You could not go back even if you tried.”

Nelly sighed a little. “You’re right. I couldn’t. And I know I won’t ever stop missing some parts of it but I ended things the best I could. It’s up to me to look forward now.”

Not long ago, Rornak had helped her calibrate one of the wormhole devices. She sent a letter through, right to her parents, and then had it cut off as swiftly as possible. It explained everything in vague terms, and gave them her love.

It was the best she could do.

She understood what Rornak was asking. Could he really keep going after all they had lost?

And she believed he could. They all could. The wounds were healing and would soon become scars. Their history would remember this day and look back upon those scars, and then learn from the sacrifices made.

It was difficult, and so many other civilizations had failed doing similar things. However, if anyone could do it, a city of dragons could.
