The door shut behind him and she fumbled for the lock. This was impulsive and something she’d never done in her life and she sure as hell didn’t want anyone to walk in on them.
Adam’s hands went to her hips as he backed her against the door. “I like this idea,” he whispered into her ear.
Butterflies fluttered in her belly as her breath caught in her throat. I can’t believe I’m doing this. “I thought you might.”
“Are you sure about this, Erin?”
Was she sure? Her body hummed in response. “Yes.”
The lights flicked on and she blinked against the offensive brightness. Then frowned at him. What was he doing?
“I want to see you, Erin,” he said as he captured her lips with his.
She moaned at the contact. His lips were full and his tongue darted out, licking her mouth and teeth. One of his hands went to the back of her neck the other found her breast, kneading it through her top.
Erin placed her hands on the collar of his uniform and tugged him closer. His member pressed against her inner thigh through their clothes and she hissed, with anticipation. He felt so big. What would it feel like to have him inside her? Lucky for her, she was going to get the chance to find out.
Her hands traced down his chest, flipping the buttons loose from top to bottom as she went. Then she settled her palms on his belt while her fingers worked to release the buckle.
“Eager aren’t we?” he said as he nipped at her bottom lip.
“It’s been a while,” she said breathlessly.
“I promise it will be well worth the wait.” He moved his hand down her belly and slid it past the elastic of her scrub pants. His fingers flicked her panties to the side and ran up and down her folds. “You’re already so wet.” Slowly, he sank one finger in and then another.
She gasped as her hands continued to fumble with his belt buckle. Why couldn’t she get the blasted thing undone? All she wanted to do was feel him inside her. It had been so long since a man had made her come. The vibrator was nice, but it wasn’t the same thing as having a cock buried deep within her.
Adam curled his fingers, rubbing them against her sweet spot deep within her core. All she could think about was his fingers and what they were doing to her. She moaned, making him repeat the action over and over again.
“Do you like that?” he asked as he kissed down her neck and then nibbled on her ear.
“Don’t stop,” she said. The belt buckle finally came loose and she shoved it to the side, going for the fly of his pants.
She moved her hips shamelessly against his hand as she undid the fastener at his pants. Her hand slid inside and found his cock. It was so thick and long. She shuddered, wondering how she would accommodate him.
Adam groaned as she wrapped her fingers around his shaft and stroked up and down. He pushed his fingers into her faster, harder, mimicking her movements.
Tension coiled in her belly and the pressure built between her legs. She bit her lip, trying to keep from crying out. The last thing she needed was to get caught. Yet the idea of someone possibly catching them made her even hotter.
“Come for me, Erin,” he said in her ear.
As if on cue she tipped over the edge. She cried out, but he captured her scream with his mouth, swirling his tongue with hers as he pushed his fingers in to ride out her orgasm. Liquid heat raced through her and she trembled from the intensity of it.
Adam removed his fingers and pulled back, placing them in his mouth while taking care to suck each one. “You taste wonderful.”
She closed her eyes and then opened them. Her hand was still wrapped around his cock and she started moving it again. Adam groaned as he pushed up her shirt and bra. She removed her hand from his length long enough to take off the two garments. Adam leaned forward and took one of her breasts into his mouth. His tongue swirled around the bud and she shivered as heat pooled in her belly again.
Adam’s hands went to her pants as he pushed them and her panties down. She stepped out of her shoes, kicking them out of her way. Adam groaned in protest when her hands left his pants. She rolled his boxers and pants down to his knees.
Her eyes widened as she took in his length. It was bigger than she’d realized. Adam took a step back to reach into his pocket. He grabbed a foil wrapper, opened it, and slid the condom up his length. She curled her fingers around the shaft again and guided it to her entrance, running the tip up and down her wet folds. She moaned and then inhaled a shaky breath. If he could get her this warmed up with his fingers, what could his cock do? She couldn’t wait to find out.
One of his hands tiptoed down her leg to her knee. He lifted it and she hooked it around his waist, drawing him even closer. The tip of his cock sank in and she hissed at the contact. He dipped his member in and out of her folds a few times before plunging all the way in.
She wrapped her arms around his neck, digging her nails into his back as he stretched her. His thick length buried deep within her core and it felt so good. He didn’t move for a moment. Instead, he nipped at one breast than the other.
Part of her couldn’t believe she was doing this. She’d never dreamed of having sex at the hospital before, though, she knew through the grapevine that it did happen. In the four years she’d been with Kirk she’d never done anything this adventurous. Nothing serious would come from this relationship with Adam, but she was excited to see where it would take her.
With that thought in mind she thrust her hips forward. Adam grunted and smacked her ass with his free hand. She gasped and he did it again as he began to pump in and out of her at a slow and steady pace.
Erin jumped up so both legs were wrapped around his waist. She locked them together at the ankles. Her lips found his and she swirled her tongue around his as the pads of her fingers trailed up and down his back. His muscles flexed against her hands as he thrust against her.
One of his hands slid between their bellies to cup her apex. His thumb pressed against her clit flicking it gently in time to his thrusts. She cried out at the contact as her second orgasm began to blossom in her belly. Her body hummed as Adam deepened his kiss.
The friction continued to build inside her until she didn’t think she could take it anymore. She rolled her hips desperate to find sweet release. “Adam,” she said between kisses.
He pushed harder against her clit. “Come for me, Erin.”
His fingers brushed over her sweet spot again and she spiraled over the edge with Adam’s name on her lips. His mouth captured hers, muffling her scream as he rode her out. Her body went lax as waves of pleasure coursed through her. Adam picked up the pace, seeking his own release as her inner walls milked his cock. He grunted, pushing deep into her center as his hot seed filled her. She panted between kisses then pressed her forehead against his sweat-slicked chest.
“That was…” She didn’t have words to describe it.
Adam nuzzled her neck as he slipped out of her. “Too bad you can’t come back to my place. I’d like to take you again.”
She closed her eyes and let her breathing return too normal. Going back to his place sounded amazing, but she couldn’t. “How about Friday night?” She was on call that night and her mom would have Caden just in case.
“I can’t wait.”
Neither could she. If she didn’t have to go back to work, she’d be content to stay inside this tiny room, but there was no way the ER would stay dead for long.
Adam kissed her lips while pushing strands of her hair out of her face. After a long moment, he pulled back and tugged his pants up. Erin hurried to gather her clothes. They dressed in silence.
“You slip out first. I’ll come out in a few minutes,” he said as he drew her in for another heated kiss. God would she ever be able to get enough of him?
“Okay.” She pressed one last kiss to his lips before turning to the door.
He caught her from behind and kissed her neck, sending gooseflesh across her body. Arousal flooded her again and she inhaled shar
ply. “I can’t wait to see you on Friday.”
She nodded, not sure she could form words and Adam let her go. Smiling, she opened the door and walked back out into the thankfully empty hallway. She made a beeline for the bathroom. What had she just done? More importantly, why couldn’t she wait to do it again? Friday couldn’t come soon enough. Had this been a mistake? Of course not. It was just sex. There was no way she was going to fall for Adam, right?
Chapter Three
“What do you think of this one?” Erin asked as she held a strapless, red dress up to herself as she gazed into the mirror. She wanted to look hot for her date tonight.
Laney leaned back on the bed and pulled her legs to her chest. “For someone who isn’t looking for a relationship, you sure are making a big deal about what to wear tonight.” She lifted her brow and gazed over Erin. “You’d totally rock it though.”
Erin grinned. “Thanks. Am I trying too hard, do you think?”
Laney sighed. “You’re asking me? I haven’t been on a date in years. But it seems like you’re making a big deal about this. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
Erin held the dress to her and let her shoulders slump. “Me either.” Kirk’s departure had hurt her at first, until she’d come to the realization she didn’t love him. Caden, on the other hand, was another story. She leaned back, glancing into the front room. Caden and Laney’s daughter, Avery, sat on the couch watching TV. She turned back to Laney. “I swear I’m still having tremors from the other night. I’ve never come that hard before in my life.”
Laney lifted her brow and leaned forward.
Erin went to the bed and sat down next to her. “I don't want anything serious. It’s just sex.”
“Are you sure?”
Erin nodded. She didn’t need the complication of a relationship right now. Between Caden and work, she had her plate full.
“If you think you can continue this charade without getting hurt go for it, but don’t fall for him. I’ve seen how Adam goes through women.”
“I’m not naive enough to think I can change him.”
“Then you should rock that red dress. Get changed. I’ll do your hair.”
Erin hugged Laney then stood. She rushed to the bathroom and slipped on her matching lace panties and strapless bra before tugging the knee length dress on. She did look good. When her makeup and hair were done she was going to look amazing. Erin hurried back out to the bedroom.
“I was right. You rock that dress. Where are you guys going tonight?”
“He didn’t say. Only that we were going out and he’d text me the details before I had to leave the house.”
“Knowing Adam it will be someplace nice. I assume you’re going back to his place afterwards?”
“Yeah. I’m not bringing him here. With my luck he’d trip over a toy while carrying me to the bed and we’d both get knocked unconscious and found by my mom tomorrow morning. We’d be one of those couples we laugh about in the ER.” She covered her face as she giggled.
“Remember that couple last week that got the anal ball stuck?” Laney chuckled as she flopped backwards.
“Yes. How could I forget? At least they didn’t try to play it off like most people do. It’s so hard to keep a straight face when those people come in.” At least once a month they got a visit from a couple that had some sort of sexual mishap. It made you think twice about how adventurous you wanted to get in the bedroom.
“I know. I have to repeat to myself ‘don’t laugh’ over and over again.”
“Me too.” Erin pulled out her makeup bag and brush from the adjoining bathroom counter before taking a seat on the carpet by her bed.
“How do you want your hair?” Laney held out her hand for the brush.
She handed it over along with a few pins and a tie. “Nothing fancy.”
Laney brushed through her hair, winding it up into what Erin thought was a messy bun.
“What about you, you think about dating again?” Erin asked after a few moments.
“I’ve gone on a few first dates. Haven’t met anyone that I want to see more than once. If guys don’t flip out about the hospital hours—”
“They flip out about the kid,” Erin finished for her.
“Exactly.”
“Being a single parent is hard.” Erin shifted as Laney slid a pin into her hair as she remembered what Adam had said about Graham. “What do you think about Graham?”
“Graham? What do you mean?”
“Do you think he’s cute?”
“Would you like me to do your makeup too?”
“Sure.” Erin turned around, not needing to look in the mirror to know Laney had done a nice job on her hair. “You didn’t answer my question.”
Laney bit her lip as she pulled out the makeup and laid it on the bed. “Of course he’s cute, but he’s my brother-in-law. I can’t date him.”
“Why not?”
“I just told you.”
“Oh please. Graham is a great guy and he already loves Avery.” She wondered if she’d ever find someone who would love Caden the way he should be.
“You don’t think it’d be weird?” Laney asked.
Erin suppressed the urge to smile. Adam was right; there was something there. “No.”
Laney sighed as she opened a tube of lipstick. “I doubt he’s interested in me like that so it’s not like it matters. Enough about me. Tell me more about your little escapade in the consultation room. I want to live vicariously through you.”
Erin laughed out loud as she told Laney the whole story.

Adam placed his hand on the small of Erin’s back as they walked to their table on the patio. The smooth fabric was thin, and even though he loved the way the red strapless dress clung to her, he couldn't wait to get it off her. Sitting opposite of her at the table was going to be hard when all he really wanted to do was take her home. He focused his attention on his surroundings. Black metal bistro tables lined the brick patio and a wooden fence enclosed the space.
“Blaze’s Grill. I haven’t been here in a while,” Erin said as he pulled out a chair for her.
“It’s one of my favorite places.”
“They have great steaks.”
It was a pricey restaurant. He didn’t typically take his flavor of the week here, but he didn’t mind spending the extra money on Erin. She was different. He wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing. The last thing he needed was to fall for someone. It would only end in disaster. His mom, Graham, even Erin were all proof of that.
“Get anything you want,” he told her as he settled into the metal chair.
She picked up the menu and thumbed through it. Her tongue darted out of her mouth and traced along her lower lip as she gazed over a page. After a moment she shut the menu and laid it on the table. “Aren’t you going to look?” she asked.
“Nah. I always get the same thing.”
“You don't like to change it up?”
He shook his head. In that respect he was pretty boring.
“Doesn’t eat breakfast for dinner and always orders the same thing.”
He grinned. “I have to be mundane in some parts of my life.”
She laughed. “I suppose it does take a special kind of person to chase after a robber.”
“I like the thrill of the chase.”
“I know your job is dangerous, obviously, but are you in constant danger all of the time?” she asked, tilting her head to the side as she studied him.
“Every time I put on the badge.” He and Graham had a reputation at the station. It had earned them a spot on a special task force that took on the harder, more unsavory cases. The other day had been his first day in a patrol car in ages, and that was only because he’d helped out a friend and taken over their shift. Until the chase, he’d been bored to tears. At least he’d gotten to end it with Erin. “What about you? Your job takes a certain...I don’t know...personality.”
She lifted her water glass to her lips
and took a sip. “It’s crazy and you wouldn’t believe some of the things we see, but I do enjoy it. The joy of saving someone’s life is...unlike anything you can imagine. Or maybe you can. I’m sure you’ve saved a few lives too.”
The waiter showed up at their table and they each gave their orders. After he left, he studied her for a long moment before asking, “What made you decide to be a nurse?”
“My mom. She’s a nurse too. She used to work in the ER and sometimes I’d have to go in with her until my grandparents could pick me up because she was a single mom. I would watch everything and it sounds crazy, but I enjoy the chaos of it. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
“Your mom still work in the ER?” he asked, trying to remember if he’d seen her.
She shook her head. “No. She blew her knee out and can’t be on her feet like she used to. She works at a small private practice where it’s not so chaotic and she can actually take a breather when she needs to.” Erin nodded at him as the waiter came back with their drinks. “What about you? What made you want to be a cop?”
He shifted in his seat as he picked up his glass. Given their conversation he should have expected her to ask, but he hadn’t. Only a handful of people knew the real reason why he was an officer.
Adam ran a hand over his face. “I told you my mom was married several times, right?” She nodded. “One of the guy’s got rough with her. Beat her up. I was only eight at the time, too young to do anything, but I tried. She got it worse trying to protect me from him.” He inhaled and let it out. “After that, I swore I’d never let my mom or anyone else be knocked around by some idiot.”
“I’m sorry, Adam.”
He forced a smile. “Don’t be. I’d like to think I’m doing a good job keeping the assholes off the streets.”
“I’d say so. You managed to book one even though they smacked you in the head with a brick. How are you, by the way?” She leaned forward as if examining him.
