He extended a hand, and a dream he couldn’t turn loose flew across the courtyard and plowed smack into him. He snatched her from her feet and brought them face to face. The blaze of glory in her expression washed through him like a cool, clear river.

Could a woman grant absolution with a smile?

With those big, dark eyes so close, every thought in his brain tangled. Dammit. He was going to need another map—or maybe he’d just stay lost. “I understand vows can be a mite troublesome.”

Her breath cooled the burn on his face. “If they are the wrong ones.”

“You think…we might be able to find the right ones?”

Quinn came nigh to passing out from lack of oxygen before the bells in her voice pealed. “I think, perhaps, we already have.”

  About the Author

Descended from a long line of Texas ranchers, preachers, and teachers on one side and Kentucky horse thieves and moonshiners on the other, Kathleen Rice Adams had no choice but to become an outlaw. Fortunately her father’s career as an Air Force fighter pilot moved the family twenty-one times before she turned 18, so the wanted posters never caught up.

For the past thirty years, she’s stayed two steps ahead of a lynch mob as an award-winning news writer, editor, and columnist, covering everything from airline disasters, political scandals, and courtroom drama to emerging technologies, dog shows, and hauntings. She’s also ghost-written or edited several non-fiction books, in addition to co-writing a series of noir-ish parodies starring a canine detective.

After living everywhere from Virginia to California and Montana to Florida, Kathleen returned home to Texas at the turn of the 21st Century. She lives on historic Galveston Island with one male human and three canine overlords.

These days, when she’s not stirring the pot in the news business, she reviews books on the Western Fictioneers blog, revisits scandalous outlaws and lawmen at Sweethearts of the West, and romances antiheroes one protagonist at a time in her own western fiction. Her short story “Peaches” debuted in Prairie Rose Publications’ Christmas anthology Wishing for a Cowboy.

Prairie Rose will publish Kathleen’s first novel, Prodigal Gun, in early 2014.
