Chapter Ten
Luke and I met with the team at the Hitching Post for our last meal in town. Syd’s mom Patty and Aunt Susie made sure we had quite the home cooked feast of fried chicken, cornbread dressing, green beans with cuts of ham, yeast rolls and peach pie for dessert.
After dinner we went over the events of the last few days. While we did get some of Peter’s antics on video, his actual appearance to me wasn’t taped.
“I wish I could have been there to see that little scamp,” Syd stated.
“I doubt he would’ve appeared Syd,” I replied. “He wasn’t fond of you.”
“I wasn’t too fond of the rascal myself…messing around in the ladies restroom. If I’d gotten my hands on him I would have turned a knot in his tail.”
“And we wonder why he felt no tenderness towards you,” Matt said with a grin.
“Yeah well, if a ghost is timid I can put on my shy face,” Syd said as she folded her napkin and placed it at the side of her plate.
“You have a shy face?” Goog asked. “Now that’s news to me. Can we get a gander of it? It won’t melt your face will it?”
Syd turned and looked at Goog. He withered under her gaze. “Nope, that wasn’t your shy face.”
We all laughed and Syd broke into a grin while hitting Goog on the shoulder. “We got to toughen you up boy. How are you going to get over your fear of ghosts? Stick with me and hopefully you’ll learn a few things.”
“I wonder when our next case will come in?” Matt wondered. “Be nice if it was someplace tropical.”
As if on cue, Patty, Syd’s mom and Aunt Susie walked over to our table.
“I don’t think you can call Appalachia tropical.” Patty looked worried.
“What’s wrong Mom?” Syd asked.
“Just got a call from my sister Pearl. We’ve got some trouble of the ghost-making kind down at the home front.”
“What’s going on Patty?” I knew Patty well enough that if she was concerned, something bad was occurring.
“Seems those whispering elms back home,” Patty said looking at Syd. “Well their not whispering anymore, they’re screaming!”
