“Yes sir, I do. Thank you.”
“You will have a room in the back of the stables with our head stable master, Jake. There are two beds in there. You’ll take your meals in the kitchen with the house staff. Jake will take care of you. I’ll take you out there now.”
Sarah watched her husband lead the boy out to the stables. She smiled, knowing she’d married the most wonderful Christian man in the world.
Realizing she’d not had a chance to hug her husband after learning he was safe, she couldn’t wait until he came back in. She had a lot to tell him.
The door opened and Brock walked in.
“Do you think I did the right thing, Sarah?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Now that I’ve done it, I’ve begun to question myself. I’m usually a good judge of people and the boy seems sincere. I could see the fear in his eyes the whole time his father had his gun on us. Then Pete stormed in from behind and managed to wrestle his father down. His father’s gun went off in the scuffle, and the boy turned pale. The bullet hit the bank ceiling.”
“Brock, I was so worried. I don’t think I could have handled losing you,” she said. “I prayed, Brock—really prayed and God listened.”
He took her into his arms. “I think you’re ready to say the prayer and give your life to God, sweetheart.”
“Oh, I am. I promised God that if you survived, I would do just that. I will. Help me to say the prayer right now, Brock.”
Brock led his wife, the woman he loved with all his heart, in prayer.
Lying in bed with the morning sun shining over them, Brock asked. “Are you happy, Mrs. Vee?”
“I’ve never been happier in my life,” she said.
He traced her lips with his fingers. “I’ve always loved your lips. The first time I met you I craved to kiss them.”
“You did?”
“I did.” He sat up and looked at her. “Why do I have the feeling there’s something you aren’t telling me?”
“Maybe,” she said as she put her arms around his neck, “because there is.”
“Please let it be something good,” he said.
She smiled coyly. “I hope it will make you happy.”
“Tell me,” he prompted.
“First,” she said, “I need to tell you why I no longer think the way I once did.
“A person like you overrides all the hypocrites. It’s evident not everyone practices what the minister preaches. They go to church to show off their new outfits, or to gossip.”
“It’s sad but so true, sweetheart,” Ned said. “There are good doctors, and bad doctors. There are good dogs and bad dogs—there is good and bad in everything and everyone. Even some preachers are less than they should be. You can’t judge people by what they appear to be. But God knows everyone’s heart,” he said.
She hugged her husband. “I truly believe that God looked down and did notice me. He could do little about my mother, or her boyfriend because Adam and Eve ate that forbidden fruit. Yet he made it possible for me to meet you, and that makes up for all the years of misfortune.”
“I like the way you thought that out,” Brock said.
“What about your not liking this house, and preferring to live in the old farmhouse? What changed your mind?”
“I’m not sure. When I lost my memory I suppose I forgot that house, and by the time I remembered it, I was used to this house, and it finally felt like home. It didn’t need my personal touches, or paint, or decorating, all it needed was you, and it felt like home.”
Brock gently pushed her back down so that her head rested on the pillow. He kissed her tenderly. “Feel free to redecorate this whole house to your liking. Welcome home, Mrs. VanSickle.”
“Now do you want to hear what else I’ve not had a chance to tell you?”
He kissed her neck. “Please tell me something good.”
She smiled, took hold of his hand and placed it on her belly. “Doc is fairly sure he knows what’s wrong with me. He thinks we’re increasing!”
Brock’s eyes widened. “Yes!” he exclaimed. “I knew our love had to produce something wonderful. I’m going to be walking on a cloud for nine months.”
“Seven,” she corrected.
Brock gently rubbed her belly. “Dear Lord, please bless this new beginning of life, and thank you for sending an angel down to be my wife.” He kissed Sarah and pulled the sheet up over their heads.
