“Then by all means, proceed,” she said.

He rose and held his hand out to her. She placed her hands in his and he led her back to the door where they could see Kelly and Keisha opening the presents they’d made for each other.

“This is what I want for Christmas,” he said. “Us. As a family.”

Renee whipped around. “Trey, I’m not sure I’m…we’re ready for a…”

He stayed her words with a finger at her lips. “This is about potential and overcoming obstacles.”

She gave him a curious look. “Is this a proposal that just got derailed?”

“No derailments here,” he said, pulling from his pocket a small velvet box. “Kelly and I have been puttering along for a while now, getting by the best way we knew how. I didn’t know anything was missing from my life, from our lives, until you and Keisha entered it.”

He opened the box and lifted from it a heart-shaped locket. He opened it and inside were photos of Trey and Kelly on one side and Renee and Keisha on the other.

“Will you explore with me where this could lead?”

Renee nodded. He slipped the thin gold chain around her neck and fastened the clasp. His fingers lingered at her neck, caressing her tender skin. “Merry Christmas, Renee.”

  “Merry Christmas, Trey,” she said.

  And then he kissed her.

Keisha and Kelly looked up in time to see the embrace.

  “Ewww. There they go again!”

“That’s right,” Trey said, against Renee’s mouth. “Expect to see a lot more of it.”
