Nicole nodded. The first time she’d entered Shonlin, she’d been concentrating on finding a book that talked specifically about the talismans.
“If you were to be thinking about a different magical item, different lights would appear and you’d be led to those instead. But if you enter, thinking about nothing, the forest would be overwhelmed with lights and would become too heavy for your capabilities. So take care when you enter.”
That definitely was something she was glad to know.
“So, go toward the light.” Nicole had a hard time not laughing when she said that—it sounded like she was talking about dying. “And it will tell me the location of the talisman? How?”
“Watch carefully—you’ll see landmarks, and a path will light up.”
“Oh, so it’s not going to take me to the talisman itself.”
“No, it won’t. You’ll have to physically travel the path. And you won’t be able to transfer the newly gained knowledge to others.”
“So, what if the magical item is on another planet or in a separate dimension?”
“It will lead you there.” He beamed at her. “Clever, isn’t it?”
“Very. I can’t wait to go back.” Especially now that she knew what to do once she got there.
“You’ve learned much in a short period of time,” he said. “Feel free to visit again to ask any questions you may have.”
Onyev got to his feet and Nicole followed suit. She turned to him, extending her hand. He looked at it curiously, then smiled, took it, and squeezed. “It was a pleasure meeting you, Nicole.”
“Same. Thank you so much for answering my questions.”
“Would you mind telling the guards on your way out that I’m available for visitors again? And good luck.”
Nicole waved goodbye and left the room, delivering his message before joining Jacob at the base of the tree.
“How was it?” he asked.
She could only shake her head. Her brain was circling and spinning. So much to think about.
Jacob didn’t pry, and it wasn’t until they’d left the city that she spoke. “I’ve got a lot of work to do,” she said.
