While Fererra sucked the life from Trenton Tross, beauty emerged and replaced the overlapping scales that she’d donned to consume her prey. Her olive complexion returned across skin soft and flawless like the day she was born. The emerald orbs that glowed in her eyes eased back into the auburn irises that she used to captivate simple-minded men.
She released her tiny fingers from Trenton Tross’ wrists, but there was no reciprocating movement from the slab of a man resting beneath her. Pulling her lips away, Fererra watched his head sink to the side. The only other time she’d seen him so helpless was when Nigel Andresen beat him black and blue and then climbed out of the cage with his title; this time it was different, it was permanent, and Trenton Tross wouldn’t be granted the opportunity to redeem himself with a rematch.
Fererra rolled from the bed and tiptoed around the broken picture frame and torn clothing as she headed to the kitchen for a glass of pinot and a butcher’s knife. On her way back she noticed that the front door was ajar, the apartment’s only object of security having been left open throughout their intimate activities. Fererra swung it shut without much thought. She returned to the bedroom, stood before of her full length mirror, and admired her own nakedness, glass of wine nestled in one hand and butcher’s knife clutched in the other. Even with seven-hundred years of immortality under her belt, Fererra never grew tired of admiring her own body. Her complexion glistened with a vibrancy that could only be extracted from the lifeblood of foolish mortals. Her every crevice showed perfection. Her every curve gleamed with youth. And her every orifice served as a gateway, capable of delivering one to either heaven or hell, all depending on the whim of her mood.
She’d enjoyed Trenton Tross, and every ounce of passion that she’d scraped from the walls of his hungry soul. He’d awakened demons in her that hadn’t come out to play in decades. And it mattered.
But it didn’t matter as much as her insatiable appetite for immortality. And it didn’t matter as much as the security that wealth could provide in this modern age of economic uncertainty.
Fererra sipped her wine then discarded the glass beside a bowl resting on the nightstand. She gave her lover a final look, admired his beauty, and sliced into his wrist with the butcher’s knife, not a care in the world for the bloody mess that gushed onto her satin sheets. She sawed back and forth, so adamant on removing the extremity that she paid no mind to the sanguine liquid that splattered her body and stained the carpet. Making it as far as the bone, Fererra tossed the knife aside and then tore into his wrist with her teeth, taking a firm bite before whipping her head back and forth, repeatedly, until the hand ripped free.
She tossed it into the bowl on her nightstand, and took a moment to admire her trophy. Even coated in blood, the scarred knuckles served as the telltale feature, leaving no doubt that the hand once belonged to the great Trenton Tross.
The Moretti family would reward her generously. Don Moretti had kissed her hand on his promise: “Finish the man who finished my poor Antonio, and you’ll never worry about money again.”
Certainly, the Don had no idea how expensive a proposition he’d made. Fererra’s immortality was a well kept secret. The Don had no way of knowing that countless generations of the Moretti family would now live indebted to a creature that never aged. And he couldn’t even consider what she’d do to the male offspring if the family ever failed to deliver. But nonetheless, it mattered.
It mattered and it made Fererra smile.

Carmilla grew up on a varied diet of horror. Her earliest influences as a teenage reader were Graham Masterton, Brian Lumley and Clive Barker mixed with the romance of Hammer Horror and the visceral violence of the first wave of video nasties. Fascinated by the Goth aesthetic and enchanted by threnodies of eighties Goth and post-punk music she evolved into the creature of darkness we find today.
