  * It’s easy to take this too far: I pick up a little jar from the table of snacks and hold it up to him. “Did you put this out on purpose?” I ask, showing him the brand name: Tupelo Honey. Wolf laughs and says no.

  * Lyman borrowed the name from a Connecticut power company whose neon sign he spotted one night on a drive between Boston and New York. The company’s motto—“Eternally at Your Service”—was Lyman’s creation: He had it painted onto the side of the community’s VW Bus.

  * Earth Opera wasn’t the only Boston Sound band affected by the Red Sox’ miraculous 1967 season. Dick Weisberg remembers a multi-night string of Beacon Street Union gigs at the Rathskeller in Kenmore Square, right next to Fenway Park. They had made a giant plywood sign that the club manager let them lean against the front, saying “NOW APPEARING, BEACON STREET UNION—ALBUM COMING THIS JANUARY!” The drummer was home watching the news when he saw the eight-foot sign being carried through Kenmore Square by ecstatic Red Sox fans. Then they smashed it to pieces.
