“Would have given the film an air of authenticity on the red carpet.”
“You never brought any dates,” she commented, fishing.
“Not like I was short of offers, especially after having my heart broken.”
She dared to glance at him, meet his eyes, but he seemed as embarrassed by the confession as she was.
“I did see you once, a red carpet premiere thing.”
“Prague.”
She looked at him again.
“Yeah, I thought it was you, but then I thought it was just wishful thinking. And what the hell would you be doing in Prague?”
“Trafficking girls,” she replied bluntly, but he sensed unresolved anger behind it. She looked away again, and took another drink.
“You get to save them?”
“Eventually.” It sounded weary, heavy with everything she wasn’t telling him.
“Casualties?”
“A few.”
She was withdrawing again. He was getting good at recognising the signs, not that it made him feel any better about it.
“And you?”
“Took a few hits. Nothing that won’t heal.”
“Do I get to see those scars too?”
“I might even let you rub some voodoo potion on them.”
“Thought you said it was witchcraft.”
