Innocence and Impropriety Page 26

‘I consider it an investment,’ Tanner said. ‘An investment in your future.’

Rose interrupted, perhaps sensing Flynn had again been rendered speechless. ‘Lord Tannerton, you must come to supper with us and meet the relatives.’

Rolling his eyes, he responded, ‘I have already encountered more Flynns and O’Keefes than I could have imagined in existence.’ He grinned. ‘They are a jolly lot. I would be happy to join you.’

The marquess left a few minutes later, after finishing his whiskey and again promising to come to the hotel for supper.

When Flynn closed the door behind him, he turned to Rose. ‘I am astounded.’

The baby had finished nursing and Rose lay her over her shoulder, patting her back. ‘You always told me he was the best of men.’

‘Indeed. The very best of men.’

She stood, still holding their daughter against her shoulder. She walked over to her husband and he very gently put his arms around her, embracing them both. He leaned his forehead against hers and they stood there together like that, swaying slightly.

‘I always disagreed with you, you know,’ she murmured.

‘You did?’ He was lulled by the feel of her, the warmth of their infant, the scent of mother’s milk.

‘You are the very best of men, Jameson Flynn.’ Her voice cracked with emotion. ‘You, my husband.’
