Finally, this book is dedicated to my sister, Lara Putnam. Lara was my first editor when we shared made-up stories with each other as children. (I think she has finally forgiven me for creating an imaginary friend, “Police-y,” whose only apparent role in our make-believe land was to arrest her imaginary friend, “Ghosty.”) She has since become an eminent historian and chair of the history department at the University of Pittsburgh. Lara was also present at the creation of this series, suggesting the essential insight that I could tell young Lincoln’s stories through Speed’s eyes. Since then, she has sent me a never-ending stream of historical ideas and tidbits to consider, as well as reading closely the draft manuscript of each of my books. I can never thank her enough.
