“Agreed.” He grinned. “Maybe I can make this a bit clearer. Something happened to me since meeting you. I don’t fully understand these strange feelings, but I know I’ve never experienced being as happy as I’ve been these past few hours with you and, well, that’s coming from a high-ranking officer in the legion of the DELAA.”
She tried not to appear ignorant, but being human, well…there you are. “The DELAA?”
“The elite forces of desire, erotic love, attraction, and affection.”
That explained a great deal. Candy’s heart did a flip-flop. “Wow, and you’re wondering if I feel the same?”
“Yes.” He nodded and glanced heavenward. “And so are they.”
She took his hands between hers. “This may seem silly, but I love you.” She held up her hand so she could finish. “And I already know that I’m in for a world of hurt when you leave—I get that, really, I do. But it doesn’t change how I feel.”
He grinned and blew out a breath, then kissed her fingers. “Okay.”
Maybe a bit more compassion would’ve been nice. “Just okay?”
He grabbed her hand and kissed it. “I wasn’t sure if my judgment was clouded, but hearing how you feel, I know it must be real—my heart is about to climb out of my chest.”
Tears pricked at Candy’s eyes. “You love me?”
“With every fiber of my being. But there’s this one small detail left before the gods agree to make me human again, set me free to love you.”
“I’m sorry. I’m still processing.”
Tucker grinned, eager to continue. “The onset of technology has produced a great amount of concern—fake cupids popping up on the Internet, match-making sites taking people’s money, magazines and classified ads.”
She nodded.
“They’ve asked that, as long as we live, would be willing to take time from our busy human lives to make love to the album on the full moon? Just to keep the juju flowing?”
“We’d be the ones to keep the mojo going?” she asked in a hushed voice.
“TPB would sanction the specific time, but we’d be on our own.” He searched her face, his hazel eyes pleading. “This is it for me, my second chance at finding true love. What do you say? Will you grow old with me?”
She curled her arms around his neck. “Sanctioned or not, Tucker, the way I feel about you, that album is going to wear out before we do.”
He reached for his phone, tapped the screen a few times, and the familiar tune came through loud and clear.
Candy scooted back on the bed, the melody already heating her blood.
“Digital lives forever.” He tossed the phone on the nightstand and fell into her waiting arms.
“Let’s get it on….” Marvin’s voice crooned.
