I would like to thank Bob Miller and Molly Russakoff for their careful reading and honest input over the course of several drafts; Deb Abrahamson and Sarah Silver for their meticulous edits; Liam Rector and the staff and faculty at the Bennington Writing Seminars for lighting the footpath; Dan Halpern, Amanda Urban, Adam Shapiro, Fondue Mike Siegel, Sabra Hammond, Dan Booth-Cohen, Frank Doyle, Willie Reagan, Richard Scher, Ted Simon, Phil Tankle, and Seth Weber for their help; my parents, Janet and Bob, and my children, Scott, Sarah, Bec, and Jenna, for their love and support; and especially my wife, Anne Wainer, for inhabiting this imaginary world with me.

  About the Author

For ten years, DON SILVER was the president of a manufacturing company in Philadelphia. In 1999, after getting his master of fine arts from Bennington College, he left corporate America to become a full-time writer. This is his first novel.

This is a work of fiction. The characters and events in this book, with the exception of the extraordinary story of Patty Hearst and the SLA, are the products of imagination. I’ve taken the liberty of introducing theories about the U.S. government and some of the people whose stories connect up with the SLA, or who were on the periphery, theories that are not necessarily true or, at least, have not been proven.
