She paused and lifted her face. It was Sally who said with awe in her voice, “Your face is shining like an angel. I didn’t believe before that you could see things. Now I’m sure of it. Tell me, what do you see?”
Jenny’s eyes were wide. Slowly she said, “I’m seeing, I’m remembering. Our wedding. There were yellow roses and—” now she was whispering, “so much spirit feeling there. I’d never experienced it that way. I still smell the roses, I still know those promises I made to Mark were the most important words I’ve ever said. Sally, it was like the whole heaven and earth witnessed our vows. But there was more, someone or something that transcended every influence I’ve ever known. I know it was there when I said, Mark, I promise you.”
Now Sally whispered, “Was it God?”
Jenny opened her eyes wide. “Oh no. It wasn’t God. I know the god influence.” Unexpectedly she shivered and looked at Sally. “God is fearsome. This was like love with eyes. Do you know what I mean?” Obviously Sally didn’t.
Thinking hard now, trying to understand her deepest feelings, Jenny said, “Well, I’m believing that my inner self is telling me to follow Mark. But it isn’t easy to decide that. It’s as if there are two Jennys inside arguing that out. I want badly to be here waiting for a miracle to happen to Joseph, but that isn’t to be. Somehow, I know that the only right way is to go with Mark. Perhaps he will be won to the only true church through my going with him now.”
“Jenny, that’s not possible. He’s taking you away from the church!”
But Jenny wasn’t listening. She hugged herself and sighed with relief. For the first time in months she had a strong, sure sense that she was making a right decision. She couldn’t wait for Mark to come.
“Sally!” Jenny jumped to her feet and tossed aside the sewing. “I want to go meet the men.”
She was nearly to Far West before she saw the lone horseman. It was Mark. When she ran to him, he slid off the horse and stood waiting. His face was clouded with worry, but when he saw her open arms and lifted face, he began to grin.
“Oh, Mark! I’m ready; let’s go now!” His arms were tight about her and Jenny sighed with contentment. Nothing else was necessary. She didn’t see his lips move or hear the whisper, “Thank you, Lord Jesus.”
