“I know.” Maddie mostly meant it. Even though she was involved with Paloma and what happened to her, even though she was determined to help her if possible, she was ready to put the rest of it behind her. “I’m tired, though. I’m ready to go home.”
“Me, too.” Nick pressed a quick kiss to the corner of her mouth and then drew her to her feet. “We’re going back to the hotel, Dwight. We’re leaving after breakfast tomorrow. If you have questions before then … .”
“I’ll probably have questions, but I’ll meet you guys for breakfast.” Dwight offered up a half-hearted smile. “You guys definitely need some rest. Also, um, you know you’re probably going to have to come back to testify, right? You can’t completely say goodbye to the city no matter what you want.”
“I know.” Maddie’s voice was small but strong. “I don’t mind visiting, especially since you’re here. I’m glad I don’t live here any longer, though.”
“That makes two of us.” Nick wrapped his arm around her waist. “Things worked out how they were supposed to, love. Sometimes fate steps in to solve problems, and that’s what happened here.
“You belong with me in Blackstone Bay, but we can visit the city occasionally,” he continued. “You never belonged here, though.”
“No, I didn’t.” Maddie glanced around the hospital, seemingly with new eyes. “I definitely ended up where I was supposed to be … and with the one person who makes everything better.”
“He’s beneath you!” Tipton called out.
Maddie ignored him and linked her fingers with Nick’s. “Do you want to get ice cream and watch television in bed tonight? I know it’s not home, but we can lock the door and tune out the world while pretending it is if you’re interested.”
Nick grinned, recognizing her bravado for what it was and wanting to encourage it all the same. “That sounds like the best offer I’ve had all day.”
“You and me both.”
They turned to leave, several questions unanswered, but their part in this particular tale was done. For both of them, that was the ultimate relief.

Acknowledgments
I’m a romantic at heart. A true romantic. I love the idea of a happy ending, so much so I have trouble writing a sad one. The world is sad enough. I like escaping in fiction. That’s just me. I like sarcasm and snark – but I’m not sure a sad ending is in me. If you’re looking for an edge like that, you’re probably looking in the wrong place. Just FYI.
