Finding a pair of pants and underwear, he made his way back down and grabbed the backpack with all the things she needed for the hospital. After changing, they got in her Jeep because it had the backseat and headed into town.
Flurries began to fall and Merryn smiled. “It’s like our first date.”
“Was it a date?” he asked. “My spin out?”
“Fine…like the first time we were together.”
“What a difference a year makes?” he mused only to have her claw at his arm as another contraction came on. He checked the dashboard clock…only five minutes had passed. His foot pressed down on the gas.
“Slow it down,” she warned after the contraction stopped and she could breathe again. “Bad weather and Larsen’s.”
His foot eased off a little, right as they reached the edge of town and he pulled into the hospital. He’d been there for the birth of his girls and he looked forward to welcoming another life into the world. Especially since a simple pig farmer had been able to give Merryn something she thought she’d never be able to have.
Six hours later, a scream tore through the delivery room as his first dark haired baby had been born. The only difference from his girl’s lighter hair. When he cut the cord, he watched as they cleaned her up and put a pink cap on her tiny head. Bigger than his first two girls by a whole pound, she still was tiny and perfect in his arms. It had been fifteen years since he’d held a baby and like a bike, he immediately fell into the role. Just like before, he hated passing her off, even to her mother.
Merryn wiped at her tears as she traced the tiny bow lips and delicate chin. “You sweet girl are over due and very much loved,” she whispered as she snuggled with the adorable baby.
His family was complete and there wasn’t a thing he wanted more in the world.
“Yes,” Merryn said as she looked down at their daughter. “Right Harriet?”
“Harriet?”
“Doesn’t she look like one?” Merryn asked. “And the world has been without a Harriet Larsen for too long.”
“She does.” Tears muddied his eyes as he remembered her first word. “Yes to what?”
“Marrying you. You’ve given me more than any other man in the world and it may just be the hormones, but if you can arrange it, I’ll marry you before I leave the hospital.”
“You just agreed to the one thing I wanted to do to you from the moment I saw you.”
