“Well, we’re definitely a triangle. This relationship has been all about triangulation from the start,” Jake said, poking fun at their history and laughing about it.
“Riiight?” Amanda winked and said, laughing along.
Kirby raised his wineglass. “Cheers to the future and never-ending posterity of The Platinum Triangle.”
“Hear, hear, I’ll drink to that,” Jake said, raising his glass too.
“Cheers,” Amanda said and smiled as she raised her glass as well.
They clinked their glasses, all giddy, and sipped their wine. Each seemed happy and hopeful about the idea of a reimagined relationship in which they’d still be together well into the future. It was a nice, warm, comforting thought, if not a passing fancy.

A little less than two years later, two boys were born hours apart on the same day: Alphonso Smith-Doyle and Julian Smith-Doyle. Two surrogates had been implanted with fertilized eggs at the same time so that the births could be as close to simultaneous as possible. Jake and Amanda had long agreed that if they had a son together he’d be named for her ancestor, the Spanish nobleman and Californio Alphonso Climent. They kept that agreement. The other boy, Julian, was named for Kirby’s great-great grandfather, the man who’d founded the bank the Smith family still maintained a majority ownership of. Jake and Kirby had married prior to the birth of the boys and legally changed their last names to Smith-Doyle so that their sons could share that name too. Although it was ultimately decided that Jake and Kirby would raise Alphonso and Julian alone, Amanda used assets from her own inheritance to establish trust funds for each boy. Her involvement was welcomed, but it was unclear how much of a presence Amanda would choose to have in the boys’ lives going forward. Their identities as Climents along with Amanda’s name as their biological mother would remain sealed for the foreseeable future. Thus, a new secret was born. Jake, Kirby, and Amanda were now bound by a secret of their own making that would keep them linked together forever as The Platinum Triangle.
