Faye nodded. “Most of it is stuff I bought.” She called to Grace. “You’re going to stay with Aunt Allison for a while.”

Grace’s eyes lit up. “With Brutus, too?”

“Yes, with the dog,” Faye said. Her eyes welled with tears. Allison realized how hard this was for sister. It probably felt like giving up, and Faye was not one to give up.

Allison put her arm around Faye. Her sister stiffened and pulled back. “I’d better go,” she said. “I have a nurse staying with mom, but her shift ends soon.”

Allison watched her leave. As she stood in the doorway, looking out into the street, she felt warm, tiny fingers latch on to her own.

“It’s hard to say goodbye,” Grace said. “Mommy always says that.”

Allison took a deep breath. She knelt down and took Grace in her arms. “How about helping me make dinner? Your Uncle Jason is joining us.”

“Pancakes?” Grace asked, excited. “With sprinkles this time? Sprinkles make everything better.”

Allison smiled. “Pancakes sound perfect. I think your Uncle Jason could use some sprinkles, too.”
