The Sheriff sat in silence for a moment before replying, “Do you mind if I ask what your particular interest in this ordeal is. I know that you and Don Marrick were friends but I can’t seem to get ahold of the grudge you have going on” ? Adrian responded, “This doesn’t go any farther than between you and me, but yes Don was a good friend but he was also a great brother”.

That threw the Sheriff for a loop, but then again it cleared up a lot of questions. “You have my attention and my word that it goes no farther than this conversation; okay, out with it. Adrian took a deep breath and explained about how his father has Telekinetic abilities as does Daniel, but not Don or himself.

“My real name is Thomas Marrick and I faked my own death to escape my father’s passion for evil. He is indeed an evil man. He used my own Brother as a guinea pig and almost killed him. He had my brother Don killed as he and his partner were about to expose the whole operation that my father organized after he

  faked his own death”.

“Was your Father trying to get you to become one of his experiments”, The Sheriff asked? “No, I was not on his radar since I don’t possess the powers that my father and Daniel have. But he did want me to help him set things up for the compound he was creating. Don’t get me wrong, my father was a brilliant man as well as Don and myself, but Daniel is the genius and by genius I mean scary smart, so much so that my father couldn’t even keep up. That’s when he decided to have

Daniel take over the role that I declined.

Daniel jumped on board immediately and my father decided that I should take a little vacation and that he would set up the arrangements”. “Is that when you saw the light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak”, the Sheriff inquired? “Unfortunately yes, and with the powerful Albert Marrick, calling most of the shots for the CIA I knew that I was targeted for disposal. I agreed to the trip which was to be a few days of fun and sun in Haiti. I knew what was coming so I showed up at the airport, checked in my luggage, went through security with my boarding pass but gave my pass to some guy in the concourse area and wished him a safe trip. He was as grateful as he was surprised. That way when they check who boarded, it will show that I was on board”, Thomas paused. “Then you slid

out of the airport and that other guy dies in your place”, The Sheriff inquired.

“When I heard on the news that night from the hotel I stayed at about the jet that went down and crashed in the Atlantic, I did feel bad for the guy, but for the one hundred and thirteen others that perished as well since they had no clue that my father was responsible for the crash”, Thomas concluded.

“Now that you have recreated yourself, you are bound and determined to put an end to your father and his work”, The Sheriff asked? “Without a doubt so you need to understand the urgency of getting to Billy before Daniel, or Vargas, escorts him to the compound. Once Vargas takes Billy inside, it won’t be Billy coming out, it will be a monster, a killing machine and he will be sold to the highest bidder of which I know of six third world countries that have bids in place awaiting their prize”.

“ I take it you have a plan, but do mind if I call you right back, my wife needs to hear from me that I’m okay and then you can go over your plans”. “I’ll wait for your call”, Thomas concluded.

Bill came out of the shower followed by an immense cloud of steam as Walt was trying to settle down his wife over the phone. Walt put his hand over the phone and whispered, “She’s insisting that this be my last trip without her. I’ve

never heard her so upset and so relieved at the same time”. Bill giggled, “You’re

such a wuss”. Walt finally was able to get his wife settled down with the promise

that he would call her first thing in the morning, then at lunch and of course

dinner as well. One thing he didn’t tell her was that he might have a tough time getting through with so many of the towers out of commission. He would save that card for play tomorrow.

“Damn Bill, get some pants on. A Pugs face has less wrinkles than your ass”, Walt pleaded. “My wife’s crazy about my wrinkles”, Bill replied. “She’s also got cataracts”, Walt countered while laughing.

“Okay, okay, so what were you able to find out”, Bill asked while getting one

arm stuck in the shirt he was trying to get on?

The Sheriff was ready to fill him in on the information he just got, but his stomach had other plans as it was grumbling in anticipation of food. “Bill could you head out and find a drive thru that’s still open and I don’t care what it is as long as it’s not fish. I need to call my contact back as he has more information”, The Sheriff asked hungrily? “Bag of Burgers and fries coming up”, Bill countered.

The Sheriff called Thomas back and they talked for almost a half hour and the

Sheriff still had more questions. “Your father faked his own death as well some time back, so do you think he copied the manner in which you faked yours and is there any possibility that Albert knows your alive. Sorry for all the questions but for this plan to work, I need to make sure all my bases are covered”, as the Sheriff continued his curiosity?

“That scenario at the airport is nothing new, I saw it in a 1950’s movie so I’m sure he had many more outs available to him, but that was the most efficient way to do it in my opinion. As far as him knowing I’m still alive, I would highly doubt it. I’ve had many people watching Daniel for quite a while and his colleagues, but no

tran smissions of any kind has come across my desk”, Thomas finished.

“Speaking of colleagues, what about those that were with Daniel, Vargas or whatever the hell he’s called. I remember Billy mentioning that those guys were like him, you know hit by lightning and with telekinetic powers and all were being pursued by Albert and company”, The Sheriff offered.

“Not exactly true; what I can say is that they all may have had some level of powers, but none of them were hit by lightning. That’s part of the equation that has stumped my father. You see, Daniel had agreed not so much to help run the compound but to be its first success story. The only electricity that went through Daniel’s body was done by machine, and not the results that my father was looking for. After a few attempts to load his body with juice through the electrodes that they implanted in him, his heart had weakened considerably thus a major disappointment to my father”, Thomas Added.

“My father finally found someone with enough powers along with surviving a lightning strike to use in his compou nd and it seems that the combination of the two events for some reason does not weaken the heart any”. The Sheriff pondered over that for a moment, “Do you mean to tell me that their whole story

was a ruse to get Billy to tag along and now Billy thinks th at they’re going to destroy the place, but Vargas is only in it for the payday and hand him over to Albert”?

“It’s not quite that simple because Billy has shown such extraordinary powers that one can’t simply turn him over. Drugs is their only option and will have to be administered without Billy knowing it”, Thomas concluded.

Thomas went over the details again and made sure that the Sheriff had the correct coordinates and times to meet up with the same four men who showed up to help him in Astoria. “Time for me to go Sheriff, I have one contact working with one of the many groups of bounty hunters out there and I need his update. I’ll be in touch”, Thomas concluded the phone call.

  35

Thomas received the ping on his phone showing that it was safe to call his

contact. “Hey Adrian, we might have five minutes before they come back with food as I’m on lookout until they return”. “Sounds good Sanders, where’s your location, I can’t pin point any activity from anyone’s phone”? “Just north of Klamath Falls Airport at some drive thru and it looks like that Vargas has made a purchase of a red Jeep Wrangler that I saw go by maybe two hours ago. Everyone here has a disposable phone so don’t waste your time. In addition there are two other groups that just showed up for thei
r shot at the bounty. It could be an eventful next couple of days”.

“I take it that Rollins knows about the vehicle and what direction it’s headed”,

Thomas aka Adrian asked? “He does and as always he will wait until he gets confirmation of their stopping point for the night and then make his move. The only problem is that with the others that showed up it will appear mighty strange for four vehicles to suddenly leave and I’m sure that the others will be on our tail in short order”, Sanders offered.

“I’ve made contact with the Sheriff and went over the plans so make sure that

things go as expected tonight and we’ll meet up tomorrow night”. “Are you really

coming out here Adrian, I can’t believe it, you were always that all great and

  powerful man behind the curtain”.

“The curtain is empty, and I’m already here my friend. You didn’t think I would let you guys have all the fun now, did you”, Thomas replied sarcastically? “Excellent, and I know you won’t tell me where you are but I sure will be glad to see you”, Sanders concluded. “Same here my friend and be safe”, as Thomas

  ended the call.

Sanders pocketed his phone and heard a click.

Sanders turned slowly but knew who was behind him, “I kind of figured it was you giving out our positions. Since I got us these phones, no one should be able to trace us, but they are, and by the way, who were you talking to”, Rollins asked sternly? “No one, just checking the weather”, Sanders replied. “I see and I don’t believe you because these phones I gave you and the others are blocked from making calls, you can only receive calls. Rollins pulled a phone out from his jacket pocket, “Look familiar”, as he held it in front of Sanders? “This is the phone that dropped you dropped after I got off the helicopter and one of the crew came over to give it to me and low and behold, it’s the one that can’t make calls”. Sanders was getting nervous but wasn’t showing it, “Now since I have your phone that can’t make calls, my guess would be the phone in your hand just might be yours and we both know you shouldn’t have one since we all agreed to ditch the phones we had before we started our journey”, Rollins finished.

With cat like quickness, Rollins drew his hand gun and sh ot Sanders three times

before he could even blink. Two shots to the chest and one to the head, was

Rollins favorite combination. There was no reaction from any of the late night crowd at Jalapeños Taco Shop since the silencer made no more than a whisper of

a noise. Rollins motioned to two of his crew members and as if they had expected something like this to happen, they opened the trunk of the Buick and tossed Sanders in like a bag of laundry.

No emotion was shown from any of the crew as they gath ered together at an outdoor dining table before finalizing their plans . Rollins had just one thing to say, “This is what happens to those who have a different agenda from ours”. The former group of eight, now at seven showed their approval by chanting, “To capture is to Prosper”.

Rollins and his crew were enjoying their combination of Tacos, burritos and

tostadas as His phone chirped, “Sounds like we might have us a location”, Rollins

mumbled with a mouth half full of tacos. He put the phone to his ear and

immediately sported an ear to ear smile and replied, “And what rooms are they

in”? Rollins got his answer and added, “Three a.m. is go time, so be ready”, and

  ended the call.

“Gentlemen we are headed for Tule lake Hotel, and they are in rooms seven

and eight which are conveniently right next to each other. Grab your grub and

let’s hit the road we should be there in less than two hours”. One of the crew

asked, “Who will be firing the darts”? Rollins turned to his colleague and replied, “I had thought that you would like the honors since you came up with the new design”. His Colleague smiled and offered, “It will be my pleasure and let me say with this new needle on the dart, the drugs will enter the blood stream much faster and my tests have shown that no one has made it past one minute before going night-night”.

Satisfied with his colleagues confidence they got into their respective cars and headed south on Highway 39. Rollins was busy with his laptop getting Ariel shots of Tule Lake as his partner led the small convoy down the road.

  36

Jenny was overjoyed to hear from me, even though it was late and she had the early shift in the morning. We got the mushy stuff out of the way first and then she asked me what all had happened from last night and making it through the earthquake and getting to this hotel in Tule lake . “Flying cars, flying Winnebago’s and flying children, I must say Billy; you sure do sound like a fun date”. Jenny was silent for a second as I could hear just a hint of a sniffle. “What you did for those people out there today was just amazing and it makes me love you that much

more. Are you doing okay, does your nose still bleed when you try to do too

  much”?

“It did a little earlier, but it stopped pretty quickly”, I replied. “I did some

research on your abilities and it’s been documented that too much activity has led

too diminished brain activity, so do you think you can maybe tone it down a little

for me. I just don’t want anything to happen to you okay”, as I could hear the

  sniffles again.

“I’ll be fine, it’s Vargas that I’m worried about, he got hit by lightning like I did, but his heart is not working so well”, as I heard Jenny’s phone buzz on the other end. “Billy can you hold for just a second Sheriff Pasco is calling on the other

line”? “Oh, Crap, yeah go ahead, I forgot that I was supposed to call him so tell

him where I’m at and whoops, sorry”.

She giggled as I heard a slight click as she answered the other line. I noticed that the clock on the dresser read two fifty a.m. I had no idea that we had been talking for almost two hours. I sure do love talking to her, although I can’t wait to see her in person again. The phone clicked again, “Glad you’re back I already missed you.

“Billy, the Sheriff says that you’re in trouble and that you need to get away

from……………………………….. The line went dead. I frantically called back but there

was no ring tone or any noise for that matter. Was Jenny okay, but then why

would her phone go dead, hers is a cell which means she should be able to call me

back? I waited but nothing happened. I picked up the phone again and there was

  nothing to hear at all.

What was it that she was trying to tell me, what am I supposed to get away

from? Okay, now I’m officially worried. Something was going to happen but the phone went dead before…………………….. Did I mention that sometimes my keen sense of the obvious is a little slow at kicking in at ti mes?

The last thing I needed was more people coming after me. How in the hell do they keep finding us? It’s not like we’re leaving a trail of bread crumbs or anything, but then it dawned on me that someone saw us walking after we got

out of the Ta xi. It had to be since Vargas said no alarms had gone off on his

security system. I am so tired of these people but not tired enough to give in or

  surrender to their whim.

I broke precedent by lighting up one of Marlboro’s finest to try and think. This

was not an easy process considering what we had gone through the past twenty

four hours. I knocked on the adjoining door between my room and Vargas’s. I heard the light click on and some unsavory grumbling as he opened the door.

“What the fuck do you want, I just got to sleep”, he muttered in anger?

  “
Sorry about that but I believe we have company”, I replied. He made a motion

with his hand that he wanted a smoke as well. He lit up and argued, “Why do you

think we have visitors”? “Check your phone on the dresser”, I offered. He threw up his arms in disgust and rambled over to the dresser and picked up the phone.

Vargas held out the receiver and sa id, ‘So the phones dead, that proves nothing. This phone is old enough to collect social security”, and placed the

receiver back in its cradle. No sooner did he say that, then the power went out and we were in complete darkness. “Okay, so what about now”, I countered sarcastically.

There were no lights of any kind moving about outside from what we could tell

form our curtain drawn windows. This situation made me extremely

uncomfortable since we had no leverage to work with. I knew that people were out there, but how many, who could tell. It was like we were in prison with no way out and they knew it; advantage-enemy.

“Those shits must have put high powered sensors around my house, that’s the only way they could have known that we were on the move”, Vargas offered. “That’s rather a moot point right now, so any suggestions”, I asked as I flicked my ashes to the carpet? “They obviously picked this time knowing that eve ryone would be sleeping and have no clue that they have no power. I would say that we don’t have much time before they make a move, and I’m sure that it will involve more of those damn horse tranquilizer darts again”, Vargas figured.

“We would need some thick ass padding to wear to keep those darts from

penetrating”, I added, as I didn’t want another one of those hangover headaches
