“That would not have been good. I forgive you then.”
Nisero snorted and shook his head. “Thank you, sir. Maybe the King will find need of our skills again and will call us back into service like he did with you before.”
“Don’t even jest. I won’t be able to sleep at night, if I start thinking about that.”
“We have a good life here. Hard earned and good. We should allow ourselves to enjoy that. We’ll remain watchful, but we should enjoy it still.”
Berengar sighed. “That is a skill I’m still in the process of learning, but I’ll do my best.”
Berengar regarded his unfinished stew for a moment and then stood. He stepped away from the table. He took down the rabbits from the hooks and retrieved his knife to begin skinning them on the floor near the fire.
Nisero watched Berengar’s back for a while as he labored. After a few moments, Nisero returned to eating without a word and allowed Berengar to go about his work in peace.
