Best Friend’s Sister Page 37

by Banks, R. R.

The man shakes his head. “He was there, but we don’t know exactly what he saw,” he offers. “He hasn’t said a word since – since we found your sister.”

  “And what about Darren?”

“We have him in custody, Ms. Reddick,” she informs me. “He was found at a bar a few blocks from the scene.”

I nod. “And has he admitted to what he did to my sister?”

The detectives again exchange glances – a gesture that’s starting to annoy me. I look at them as the pain and rage within me starts to burn brighter and hotter.

“Not yet,” the woman finally admits. “He’s claiming he was at the bar the whole night and doesn’t know who killed your sister.”

  “That lying piece of –”

“Let us worry about him.” The man puts a comforting hand on my shoulder. “We’ll get to the truth of things.”

The woman nods in agreement. “You just worry about taking care of your family.”

Family. What family? Other than Toby, Maisey is the only family I have left. And now she’s gone.

Emptiness and despair well up within me and swallow me whole, pulling me down into a dark, bottomless cavern.

The last thing I remember is the tears rolling down my face and feeling like a hole is burning its way through my chest right before my entire world goes black.
