“Yes. When your grandmother was young. We had some fun.” Mrs. Claus sat down at the coffee bar. “I know you aren’t open yet, but could I have a cinnamon spiced hot chocolate. It’s my favorite. Can’t always get it at the North Pole.”
“Sure.” Marra got to work, heating the milk and mixing the other ingredients, hoping it passed approval.
“Oh, you have a customer.” Kain came down the stairs at a run, his hair wet and slicked back from the shower.
“Ahh, here he is.” Mrs. Claus got up and held out her hand to Kain. “Good to meet you. I came to give you the once-over. I’ve had my eye on you. And Bas and Asher. Three young men who deserve to find their mates.”
“Me and Bas. This is your doing?” Kain asked.
“I may have had a hand in it,” Mrs. Claus said. “And Asher too.”
“You know where Asher is?” Kain asked.
“Not exactly.” She smiled, mischief in her eyes. “But he’ll have a tale to tell when he returns.”
“He’s found his mate too?”
“Oh yes.” She winked. “My lips are sealed.”
Marra placed the hot chocolate down in front of Mrs. Claus. “Here, on the house. It’s the least we can do.”
“Thank you.” Mrs. Claus sipped her hot chocolate. “Oh, that is delicious.” She set the cup down. “You are a fine Marraine Le Fey. Maybe the best yet.”
“I’d agree with you there,” Kain said. “And so will all your customers.”
Marra looked up; there was a crowd of people outside. She wiped her hands, on her apron. “OK. Let’s do this.”
Kain opened the door, and the café, once a drab, tired antique shop, took on a new life, a new role in the community. And Marra felt as if she was floating on a sea of sparkles. But it wasn’t magic that swept her away, it was the love of her man, and of the many people she would touch, both with her magic, and her kindness.
