Childhood Sweethearts Page 21

“Who is it?” she shouted, as she made her way to the door.

Before opening the door, she stole a look through the peep hole.

She opened the door to see the mailman going through his bag.

“Can I help you?” she asked him.

“Yeah, I got something her for Monica.”

Smooth pulled out his gun and pointed it at Donna. He placed a finger over his lips while stepping over the threshold and closing the door behind him.

  “Where is she?” he asked.

The lady pointed down the long hallway.

“Don’t do nothing stupid, lady. My beef is with Monica, not with you,” Smooth cautioned.

  Donna nodded.

  Smooth called China.

“Who else is here?” he asked, after hanging up.

  “Nobody,” Donna whispered.

  “No kids?”

  She shook her head.

Smooth directed Donna to have a seat. He sat where Monica wouldn’t see him if she came down the hall.

He noticed that the lady didn’t seem troubled by his presence and he made a mental note to watch her closely.

He thought about shooting her right then, but he didn’t want to give Monica the heads up and have her call the cops.

He heard the door open, so he hid his gun under one of the cushions from the couch, even though he knew it was China. He was playing it safe.

China stepped in and locked the door behind her. Her hair was wrapped in a ponytail and tucked under her baseball cap. The oversized jeans and football jersey concealed her identity well, but Donna immediately knew who she was.

“Hi China,” Donna said, after only a glimpse of her after she locked the door.

Smooth picked up his gun again.

  “Where is she?” China asked.

  Donna pointed with her chin.

Smooth noticed that China was all business now, as she started for the hallway.

“Pssst,” he called her back. “Let her call for her,” he suggested.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Donna yelled Monica’s name.

  There was no response.

  Donna called again.

Smooth was feeling around the old lady. She was far too cooperative.

She called again without any prompting.

Just as China was about to walk down the hallway, she heard Monica’s voice.

“What do you want? Why do you keep calling me?” she asked, storming into the living room.

Monica’s phone fell from her grip when she saw the two gunmen in the house.

“Hi Monica,” China said to her ex-best friend.

Monica thought she heard China’s voice, but how could that be? China was in jail.

China removed the cap from her head.

Monica gasped, as the tears started down her cheeks.

“Don’t waste your time with the tears, boo boo.”

Smooth noticed that Donna had a smile on her face.

“First things first,” China spoke to Monica. “I don’t hate you ... at least not enough to kill you. But I love Smooth enough to kill you to protect him. So either you tell me where it is or ... well, you know the rest.”

“Please, China, I’m sorry. Please. I wanted to give it back to you. I’m so sorry. I’m sorry, China. Oh my God, I’m sorry!”

“I’m not here for the money. Now where is it? I’m not asking again.”

What scared Monica more than anything was China’s calmness.

“Promise me you won’t hurt me.”

“You’re in no position to be making demands. Maybe you’ll start talking if I shoot her,” China turned the gun on Donna.

“Maybe I can tell you where it is,” Donna said.

  China raised an eyebrow.

“Do you even know what I’m looking for?”

“No, but if you tell me, I might know where it is.”

“I’m looking for a gun,” China told her.

“Come with me,” she said, as she rose from her seat and headed for the back door.

“Go into the garage and bring the shovel with your, honey.”

Smooth did as he was told and entered the garage cautiously. He retrieved the shovel and walked out the door behind Donna.

Monica watched in dread as Donna directed Smooth on where to dig. She felt the fear paralyzing her more and more, every time he thrust the tool forward. Smooth dug until he heard the metal of the shovel hit the box buried in the hole.

With the shovel next to him, he dropped to his knees and pulled out the box. The weight felt right. He shook off the excess dirt from it, and when he did, he heard the object shuffling around inside.

“Let’s go back in the house.”

Back inside, he placed the box on the table and opened it. The gun was wrapped in cloth, and Smooth quickly unwrapped it with trembling hands. The smile on his face after unwrapping the gun was all the verification China needed to know that he’d found the gun.

“How many bullets are in it, baby?” China asked.

“Check for yourself,” he said, as he handed it to her and took the gun she was holding.

After checking, China put the clip back in and cambered a round.

“We already wasted enough time here,” she turned the gun on Monica.

“Wait, wait, wait!” Monica screamed, holding her hands in front of her. “I’ll take you to the money.”

  China shook her head.

“I didn’t come for the money. I got what I came for.”

Just as China was about to squeeze the trigger, she heard Smooth’s voice.

“Where is the money?” he asked.

  Monica turned to Smooth.

“I have it where it’s safe.”

China’s anger overtook her. She drew back and struck the barrel of the gun across Monica’s forehead.

She screamed out in pain as she fell to the ground.

China pounced on her and forced the gun into her mouth.

  “Answer the question, bitch!”

China was so entranced with Monica and the hate that washed over her that she hadn’t noticed that Smooth and Donna had walked away.

She hit Monica again and again.

“Where’s the money?” she asked again.

China was still on top of Monica when Smooth walked back into the room carrying the suitcase.

  “China,” he yelled her name.

“Let’s get out of here,” he told her.

Slowly she rose to her feet.

Monica lay by her feet moaning in pain.

China looked down and fired four bullets into Monica’s small frame.

Smooth noticed the smirk on Donna’s face.

“What is it with you?” Smooth asked.

“Y’all just did the world a favor by getting rid of this filth!”

“Donna, I don’t want to hurt you, but ...”

  She silenced China.

“Baby, you don’t have to worry about me. I was in the process of leaving her to herself anyway. I got to take care of the kids. I’m the only person they got left in this world.”

A look passed between Smooth and China, and with that look they both agreed.

“How are you going to explain this?” China asked her.

“This is what I saw when I came back from my morning walk.”

Smooth nodded. He opened the suitcase and took out several stacks and placed them on the table.

“Go get the car,” he ordered China.

After returning, China turned to face Donna.

  “Don’t make me regret this.”

  “Hush your trap, child.”

Smooth and China got in the car and drove away. They made it back to Ga Ga’s without a single word passing between them.

Roxy was on the porch waiting when they arrived.

Smooth nodded indiscreetly to her. She returned his nod.

Now in Smooth’s car, they headed home.

“Here,” China said, handing over the gun with which she jus
t killed Monica. The same gun he had killed Boss with months earlier.

“Why you giving it to me?” he asked her.

“So you can do something with it.”

“What should I do with it?”

“Do whatever you want. I trust you.”

Smooth smiled. “I trust you, too.”
