They lay beside each other. Sadie was tired and happy. Being cradled in Dimitri’s arms was the best feeling in the world. She looked forward to a lifetime of this.

“You know,” she said. “You never told us what you’re going to do with your share of the money.”

Dimitri looked away thoughtfully. “You know, I’ve been thinking about that. There was something that Conrad said that gave me an idea.”

“Ugh, don’t say his name. Not here.”

He smiled and leaned down to kiss her head. “You’re right. Sorry. But a lot of the men I served with, shifters that I call my brothers. They don’t have a lot of options when they get home. When all you know how to do is fight, there’s not really a lot of job opportunities.”

  “I suppose that’s true.”

“And it burns me up inside to think they can end up being taken advantage of by men like,” he paused. “Well, you know.”

“So you want to help them? I don’t think there’s enough money to support them all.”

“No, but it’s enough to start something. You’ll be taking care of your animals with your money, and I’ll figure out a way to take care of my friends.”

  Epilogue

Sadie and Dimitri stood looking at the newly finished building. It was set apart from the main building of the Sanctuary, built on an empty plot that had never been used.

“You don’t think this will be confusing?” Sadie asked, looking at the sign above the front door of the new structure. The sign read “Sanctuary Security.”

“Absolutely not. You’re the Fisher Animal Sanctuary, and I’m Sanctuary Security. Totally different.”

Sadie raised an eyebrow at him. “I don’t know. I mean, maybe if you were located somewhere else people would understand. As it is now, aren’t people just going to think this is the security office for my Sanctuary?”

Dimitri looked back at the sign and paused, considering her words. “Shit, well now I think that. Where were you a few weeks ago when I chose the name?”

“Don’t blame me, mister. You were the one who insisted that this be a surprise.”

“It’s more fun that way,” he said.

“True. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less confusing.”

“You think I should change it?” he asked, frowning. “I mean, I’ve already paid for the sign.”

“It is a great sign,” she said, hooking her arm around his waist. He put his arm over her shoulder and pulled her in close. “Besides, it’s a good name. A strong name. And it sums up everything you’re trying to do.”

Her words brought a beaming smile to his face. “It does, doesn’t it?”

“Yes. It’s a noble thing you’re doing. Even if no one will ever be able to find this place.”

He laughed. “I’m not worried about that. People who need us will find us.”

“I saw that Garrett is back. Any luck on finding some recruits?”

Dimitri nodded. “He rounded up a few of our old squad mates. And once we get some business, I’ll be able to take on more help. It’ll be good to give my old friends a purpose again. Let them use their skills again, but for the right reasons.”

“What about you? Are you going to be taking on any of these jobs?”

He looked down at her and grinned. “Not a chance. I finally found my peace in this world. I’m not giving that up.” He rested his hand on her stomach. “Plus, I’ve got the little one to think about.”

“Just promise me one thing,” she said.

  “Anything, my love.”

“Before you decide on a name for the kid, you run it by me first.”

He laughed. “That’s a promise. But I do have some ideas.”

  “Okay, let me have it.”

“Well, if it’s a boy, I was thinking Sam.”

“For my father,” she said. “That’s really sweet.”

“He’s the reason we found each other after all. In a roundabout way. I think it’s fitting.”

“Yes, I think so, too. And if it’s a girl?”

  “I was thinking Seraphina.”
