Chapter 10
This guy is fucking with the wrong person. I know who everyone is in this city. If he doesn’t leave Devon alone, I will fucking end him. This is why I don’t trust anyone else to take care of her. I’m the only one capable of not fucking up.
I saw him get out of his truck with flowers while I stood a couple houses away and watched. For being a detective, he really isn’t all that observant. Twenty minutes later he was walking back out. Seeming upset. He must have seen my guys’ handiwork. I know she doesn’t have a boyfriend or a lover. This guy is new, trying to shove himself in her life.
Well, I can’t allow that to happen, can I? He’ll destroy all my plans.
Chapter 11
Enzo
She’s the first and last thing on my mind daily. I just cannot believe what I saw the last time I was there. How any woman can allow that to happen to them is beyond me. I just got home from my shift, and the minute I walk in the door to my house, I’m greeted by the ferocious barking of Remy. Remy is a two-year-old, sixty-pound pit bull I rescued from a place that saves the breed from bad situations.
When I walked into Rescue Haven, the first thing I saw was a tiny little woman trying to corral a bully and get him back into his crate. His response to that? To plop his big ass down on the floor and not budge. But the minute he noticed I had walked in the door he stood up from the floor and started wagging his tail. It was all over from there … I was leaving with that dog.
He is the king of this house; he’s only in his crate when I leave. If I left him out, he would probably eat the house just to get back at me for leaving him alone. I was looking for someone to keep the house a little less lonely, and I definitely got that with this pooch.
“Remy, dude, chill. You know I’m going to let you out.” As I walk to his crate, he gets more and more excited. And the minute I open that door, he comes speeding out of there like a Tasmanian devil. Hardwood floors and dog claws don’t mix. He’s sliding all over the place. I stand there and watch him slip and slide while wagging his entire body trying to get close enough to me so I can pet him.
I give his whole body a good rub and take him outside so he can do his business. And once I give him his food, I walk into the living room and plop my ass down on the couch. I pick up the remote, turn the TV on, and start flipping through channels. I stop on an old rerun of Man v. Food.
Not really paying attention to whatever food challenge Adam is attempting, my mind strays back to Devon. As it usually does. I’m trying to figure out how to help her with whatever is going on. But first I need her to talk to me. Maybe if I can just get her out of the house and out of her element, I might be able to get her to open up.
I pick up my phone and unlock it to send her a text.
Me: Devon, I’m taking you out one of these nights. You may as well give in now.
I set the phone back down, and try to get into the TV show enough to distract myself so I don’t obsessively check my phone every thirty seconds.
Chapter 12
Devon
“Devon, sweetheart, just because you’re supposed to meet one of your regulars doesn’t mean you can be late,” he tells me.
“I know. I got stuck in traffic on the way over. It is rush hour,” I snap, before looking around the room. It’s always this fucking room. I sneer at the room itself. Which I’m sure this jackass thinks I’m aiming at him.
“Wipe the look off your face.” See, I told you. “I don’t care what fucking excuses you have for me. I just need you here when you’re supposed to fucking be here. I don’t care how you go about doing it. Just fucking do it!” he roars. He rarely loses his temper with me, but when he does, it’s “Go big or go home” for him.
He stands and stalks around the desk. I know better than to get up and try to get away, because it only makes things worse. When he reaches me, he grabs my arm and hauls me out of the chair, pulling me up in front of him, chest to chest. He digs his hand into my arm so hard I feel like it’s going to bruise. My bruises are just now starting to really fade from the last time I was here.
“I am so lenient with you that others are thinking I’m getting soft. All I’ve done is allow you to make me look like a fool.” His voice is so quiet … but that’s what makes it so loud.
“You just can’t admit you have a soft spot for me in your cold, black heart,” I say, my voice dripping in false sweetness.
“You stupid cunt. You just don’t know when to stop, do you?” I know that’s a rhetorical question. “This is your last fucking warning. Stop everything you’re doing and be the good little slut you’re supposed to be.” He releases my arm and I stumble away from him, automatically bringing my hand up to rub the offended spot.
“Just get to your room. Mark should be here in a few minutes, so go get yourself ready.” He turns his back on me, effectively dismissing me.
I had already placed my bag in the room before coming in here to meet with him, so all I have to do is clean up my face and put my lingerie on. Mark has a lingerie fetish. Even though none of them last very long because he rips them off of me.
I shudder. It’s so nasty. Having sex with a man in his fifties. A man who has a wife, a family, and I’m sure grandkids. How his wife could not know what he’s doing is beyond me. As I walk out of the room and outside, not one person says a word to me. But fucking Kameryn is walking in as I pull the door open.
“Oh! You finally learned your place, did you?” She bats her eyes. Gah. Can I just stab her now and get it over with?
But I just shake my head, I don’t have the time to deal with her shit. I walk by her and don’t even feed her bitchiness. No matter what I would say or do, she would say something that will set me off, and I don’t need to do that in front of the Boss.
I make my way to my room and set about getting myself ready. I strip out of my clothes and grab the simple black baby doll lingerie I chose for tonight. Not like it’s going to last a long time anyway. After slipping on the matching panties, I walk over to the bed and sit down. Remembering the last time I was here with Mark. Shuddering, I vow to keep my mouth shut tonight. To do what needs to be done and get the fuck out.
**
Mark walked through the door of the room and didn’t waste any time. The minute the door slammed behind him, he started stripping. And I played the dutiful little slut and sat there waiting for instructions. Oddly, he doesn’t pause to give me any. He just stalks over to me and grabs me by the hair and hauls me up off the bed. Mark’s not a really tall guy, but he pulls me up until I’m standing on my tippy toes trying to relieve pressure from his hold on my hair.
“Fancy. Rumor has it you’ve been seen with one of Columbus’s finest. Care to tell me what you’re up to?” he sneers.
“It’s not anything. I’ve ran into him a few times, but that’s it,” I say, gasping the words out. His hold on my hair tightens, nearly pulling my feet off the floor.
“It better not be. You know I risk so much to come see you. Just like I did with your mom.” He slackens his grip on me and then pushes me back on the bed. I fucking hate when the guys who used to see my mom tell me about their times with her. Mark always jumps at any chance to tell me stories. Always comparing me to her.
He joins me on the bed, running both of his hands up the inside of my thighs. I close my eyes, wishing I could turn my brain off. He runs a finger over my panty-covered pussy. I’ve not had sex with anyone since my last time here. Besides my ass being a little sore, everything else feels okay. I’m sure when he starts fucking me, my vagina is going to protest. But I have to do what I have to do. If I refuse, we all know what will happen.
He leans downs and pushes his face into my panties. Taking a deep breath, he breathes in my smell. I don’t know why guys do this. I don’t have the urge to shove my face into their crotch and sniff their dicks. He takes his hands and gently pulls my panties down. Him being gentle at all is something new. Something I don’t like at all.
“You know I
love your pussy more than my wife’s, right?” he asks out loud. But I don’t answer, knowing it’s rhetorical. “She’s a lot older than you. Loose pussy after having kids. I wish she could watch us. Maybe you could teach her a few things.” He’s rambling. And I keep my mouth shut. He’s being nice; I’m not ruining it.
He starts stroking a couple fingers just inside my lips, parting them slightly. I hate this part so much, my traitorous body always responds. No matter how many times I tell it to stop, it still does what it wants. He slides one finger inside me, making sure I’m wet before grabbing a condom and sheathing himself. He places himself at my entrance and slowly pushes himself inside me.
I hate this gentle side of him. It makes him seem human. Makes this seem not as horrible as it actually is. He keeps whispering things with each thrust. Things I’m trying to ignore. But my attempts at imagining someone else over top of me is futile. The tan, rock hard body I want is nowhere near what is actually over me. Inside me.
I have to fucking get out of this. I cannot keep doing this.
“Devon. Your mom used to talk to me all the time about you,” he rasps. This makes me snap my eyes open. “She used to tell me what a beautiful girl you were, how much I would love your pussy.” Fucking gag me. Gag me now!
“It’s such a shame she was running her mouth that night.” Each word is grunted out with each pump into me; he is getting closer. “She just wouldn’t shut up. All she talked about was you, but all I wanted was her.”
What the fuck is he going on about? Obviously he’s talking about my mom, but what the hell? Bringing up my mom is a surefire way of my body to go cold. Not like I ever get off during this, but still.
I feel him jerk into me a little roughly as he lets out a horrible-sounding howl. It almost sounds like someone is killing him. I’ll be the first to sign up for that job.
Afterward he’s getting dressed, and I’m still on the bed mulling over everything he said when something strikes me as odd.
“Why did you call me by my name?” I ask.
“What? I didn’t. I know the rules,” he snaps at me. I’m not going to push him about it; I’ll just say something to Boss about it. Mark is being so weird tonight, and I don’t like it at all. When people get weird and sketchy, mistakes are made. And I’m not prepared for the fallout from that yet.
Chapter 13
Enzo
I’m driving around with Remy. This dog drives me nuts. I’m pretty sure he thinks he’s a human by the way he acts. I’m heading over to the park with him to try to get him to expel some energy. This dog always acts like he’s on crack.
While we’re driving I almost want to drive by Devon’s house to see if she’s home, but I don’t. It’s been a week since I walked out of her bedroom and I haven’t heard from her. I’m trying to give her some time to come to me, but if she doesn’t I’ll roll in guns blazin’.
I turn down the drive into the park and pull into a spot at the back of the parking lot. I jump out of the truck, keeping the door open for the dog to come out after me. I hook him up to his leash and we start walking toward the walking path. We start out with light jog since I’m not sure how Remy is going to handle running at first. But it turns out the dog is dragging me behind him.
This is my favorite kind of weather to run in. It’s in the low sixties today and the sun is shining. Just warm enough that I can still run in shorts and long-sleeved shirt. We get going at a good pace, and maybe thirty minutes goes by before we turn around to head back to the truck.
It’s funny how when I’m running I get lost in my own head, never really paying attention to anything around me. But when a flash of long, toned legs ahead of me comes into my line of sight, they have my full, undivided attention. I slow down as she gets closer to me. Realization dawns when I see that it’s none other than the star of all of my fantasies.
I see the exact moment she realizes who I am when she comes to a complete stop on the path.
Smiling, I say, “Well, I was wondering when I was going to run into you again. Your face looks better.”
She ducks her head at my comment and I take a minute to check her out without getting caught. She has her hair piled on top of her head, she is wearing hot-pink spandex shorts, and she has on a long-sleeved compression shirt. The shirt looks like it’s painted onto her body, leaving nothing to the imagination. Her breasts are full and perky—they would fit my hands nicely. If I were with her, she wouldn’t be leaving the house looking like this.
“I didn’t plan on running into you again,” she says softly.
“That’s a damn shame, muñeca,” I tell her.
“What does that even mean?” She laughs. I love her laugh, even if her face doesn’t light up when she does.
Ignoring her question, I ask her, “Why don’t you come grab something to eat with me? We can talk.”
She gets a solemn expression on her face that I don’t know how to interpret. “As much as I want to come eat with you, I really don’t think I should.”
“I’m really not taking no for an answer, so you should just accept it now rather than fighting.” I grin at her. Her answering smile and laugh have me almost pumping my fist in victory. “C’mon, let’s walk back to the truck and we’ll be on our way.”
“You really are something, you know that? You don’t give up. And don’t think this is a date. It’s not,” she says with a stern look on her face. It’s almost comical.
“Whatever you say, muñeca.” She laughs out loud.
**
I tell her we’re going to head back to my house since I have Remy with me. I explain that I will whip us up something or order us some food. She just smiles and looks out the window of the passenger side of the truck. I keep sneaking glances at her, well what I can see since Remy had decided he wasn’t getting in the backseat. His fat ass hopped up into the cab and sat in the center of the bench seat.
I tried yelling at him and forcing him to the backseat but he just looked at me and blinked. Damn dog. Devon didn’t even bat an eye at my headstrong dog, she just opened the passenger door and climbed in and shut the door behind her. I watched her rub his face with both hands and talking to him like he is a baby. And the damn dog is just eating it all up.
“If you’re not careful you’re going to end up with someone wanting to leave me for you.” I watch her face while she plays with him, she seems like she’s loving this too.
“I always wanted a dog.” Her voice is so small that it almost breaks my heart.
“You can borrow him anytime.” She smiles at me, and my heart starts to race.
We drive almost all the way to my house in silence. “How old are you?” This seems like something I should know about her if I can convince her to see me more on a semi regular basis, instead of running into her wherever.
“I’m twenty-one. How old are you?” she asks.
“I’m thirty-three. Jesus, I’m twelve years older than you,” I huff.
Her laugh makes me smile. It’s the only time I’ve see light in her eyes. “Yes, you’re so old. I can’t imagine what everyone would think if they saw us together.”
Chapter 14
Devon
We pull into the driveway of a really nice house, in a really nice neighborhood. “So, being a detective pays well, huh?”
He smirks. “I don’t do too badly for myself. Let’s go inside and I’ll see if I have anything I can make us.”
When I hop out of the truck, I look up and down the street. I’ve had this nagging feeling that I’m being watched. Such a creepy feeling. But I see nothing that looks out of the ordinary, not that I would have the first idea of what looks out of the ordinary here. I take in the surroundings of his yard and the front of the house. It’s such a quaint little place. So much nicer than campus housing.
“I can bring the food out here if you’d like, but I believe we’ll be a lot more comfortable inside.” His voice draws my focus to him. He’s standing on the porch, leaning against one of the be
ams holding the roof up. He’s just standing there smiling at me. Such a normal thing to do. God, I wish I could keep today like a pretty wrapped present on Christmas morning. To have when I need a reminder.
“I’m coming,” I tell him. I start walking up to the porch where he’s standing and I notice his grin gets bigger—if that’s even possible. And then I find out why.
“That’s what she said.” He then bursts out laughing. I just shake my head at him as I walk past and open the door. I crack a smile once I know he can’t see my face.
When we get inside, he leads me to the kitchen. And I’m amazed at how nice his place is considering it’s a bachelor pad. I hear him following behind me, not saying a word. It’s almost like he’s letting me take everything in. His kitchen is very bare and very simple. But in a way it suits him.
He walks past me, opens a drawer, and pulls out a bunch of take-out menus.
“What are you in the mood for? Pizza, Chinese, or burgers?” He looks up from shuffling through all the papers.
“Pizza?” I state that as a question to see if he agrees.
“Sounds good. Do you like anything in particular or anyplace more than the other?”
I shake my head. “Order whatever and from wherever. I’m not picky,” I tell him. He grabs his phone, dials, then places our order. After he hangs up, he directs us to his living room with Remy hot on our heels. I plop down on the couch and Enzo sits at the other end. Remy places himself at my feet. This dog is great.
