Vikkel sighed.
“Well, while you do this, I’m going to plan.” Kalera went back to the bedroom and left the door ajar so she could see what Vikkel did in the other room. While he continued to sort, move, and reorder on her behalf, she sat on her futon and pulled out a black, opaque ball the size of a melon from a duffle bag beside her foot. “Show me a recycled soul on this planet,” she whispered, eyes crossing and hands warming against the ball made of Yahzen-based peripah.
The center of the ball swirled around like a mist. The beating of wings exploded in an array of little butterflies. Kalera didn’t budge when a butterfly crawled out from the bottom of the ball and flew out of the crack in the window.
The image left behind in the ball was nothing like what a common fortune teller saw.
