"Sure… I thought it would be better to start fresh and give you a chance to get to know me, uncomplicated by sex."
"I've been so foolish," she confessed. "I knew that you were physically attracted to me, but you've sounded so… so…" Her voice trailed off and she saw his expression change to one of amusement.
"From the beginning I knew you were the woman for me. I dreaded the thought of leaving you alone with all those oil men—especially with Paul Elmwood trying to lure you."
Stacy laughed, and he looked at her with mock reproof. "Paul's very lucky I didn't smash his face in when I caught the two of you in the garden."
Running a finger across his clenched jaw, Stacy said lightheartedly, "I never would have guessed."
"Don't get saucy with me, woman! You're in an extremely vulnerable position." He grinned at her devilishly. "These hospital gowns are indecent… they couldn't find any large enough."
"You wicked man! Your mother might be back at any minute."
"So what?" he said disdainfully, his normal arrogance resurging.
"So… I think I'll move." She tried to pull out of Drew's arms, but he pinned her against his chest.
"Oh, no, you don't." And with that he proceeded to thoroughly kiss her as though making up for lost time. Stacy did not struggle.
Neither of them noticed the door glide open or heard it close.
Several minutes later when the nurse came by to check on her patient's condition, Dorothy cornered her. Her voice was so penetrating that when the nurse continued into the room all she saw was Stacy standing at her husband's bedside holding his hand.
Drew flashed his wife a mischievous grin.
